How do you store clothes?

I put expensive wollen jumpers and jackets in one spare wardobe and put something in against the moths. Mainly I refuse to buy another wardrobe just like we won't buy another Billy(IKEA) bookcase. If we buy new then we have to throw something away. Some say if you've not worn it in 2 years then turf it out. Apart from Black. You can always wear that again sometime even if its for a funeral.
When I came to Germany over 40 years ago with a trunk and 3 suitcases, the summer was very hot. I had one dress on and another in the wash, my DD1 aged 3 wore nothing but little shorts. Such an uncomplicated way of life, which I didn't appreciate.

Mine tend to gather on the floor and I have to turn them inside out and shake them for fear of spiders lurking . I'd love a walk in wardrobe. Perhaps if and when my kids move all of their stuff out of my house one of the rooms will become one. I'm a messy person that longs to have everything colour coordinated and arranged nicely.

Actually it's not that simple, I have quite a few functions every year where I have to dress up. I have specific types of outfit that I have to wear for two different choirs. Each demands different outfits again for xmas and Easter concerts if held in churches. I have gardening clothes for all weathers. And a very active social life.

However, DBH has even more outfits than me (dress shirts and djs for concerts, loads of outfits for athletics and hockey, cricket and what have you) and keeps his clothes in our bedroom. This is because if I let him have the dressing room, it would be one giant floordrobe. At least I can glare at him if he gets into bed without putting away his teetering tower-of-Pisa-like mound of clean clothes. One day though maybe I will have had enough and he will come home and find that I have swapped them all over.

Crikey. My "summer clothes" would fit into a backpack, so they stay in the wardrobe. Our shared built in wardrobe is two thirds full of husband's clothes and the rest is mine.

And: pompa !

I can't get rid of clothes: I always think," I might lose enough weight to get into that."
So at the change od seasons, I put all summer/winter clothes clean into black bags, label them and put them up in the attic.

With me it's 1% 99% of the time I think! I've just been to Dunelm and bought clothes covers and storage boxes. Also lots of those silk covered coat hangers that stop your clothes going a funny shape at the shoulder. Weddings have been my downfall over the years; clothes that I will never wear again cause I just don't wear those sort of clothes. Do suit covers stop moths; I 've got a few cashmere sweaters that I tend to keep in storage boxes so the moths can't reach them? Then, if I do think to wear them they're too crinkled so I put them away and wear one of my 'old faithfuls instead'.

Apparently we wear 20% of our clothes for 80% of the time.
Does that mean we only wear the other 80% for 20% of the time?
I have loads that I hardly ever wear. Things bought to wear for a wedding, posh frock, matching jackets are just hanging there, plus evening wear, because we are all more informal now aren't we. They have to go, really. Must just do it. Maybe tomorrow.....

I'm 'if in doubt better hang on to it' ; however you'd all be amazed at the amount of stuff lying on the bedroom floor waiting to be bagged up and sent for recycling. Mind you, it hasn't actually got to that stage yet. Once in bags I may hang onto the bags 'just in case'.

I work on the basis, 'If in doubt, chuck it out'.

A friend of mine said she used to go through her wardrobe and if she hadn't worn something for two years then out it would go. Good in theory, but I can always find a reason to hang on to things...

I can still get all my clothes into one wardrobe and a chest of drawers. I hate having clothing lying around that is not in regular use. I find it confusing and bothering. However at the end of summer/winter I wash everything or get it cleaned, put everything on hangars with plastic bags over them and move them to the wardrobe in the spare room. I have a similar attitude to shoes/hand bags/jewellery/accessories. I use it or charity shop it.

At the beginning of each season I review what I've got, donate to charity/chuck out anything worn out, tired or just outdated and make a replacement list. I hate any sort of clutter or untidiness, it mommers me.

On the rare occasion that I go out I try on just about everything in my wardrobe which stays piled on the bed for a day or so and end up going out in my tried and tested 'black top and trousers' .

for the first year ever i have put away my summer things properly. as i've done it i've only kept that which i love and gotten rid of what i don't. i've made sure it's all washed and rolled up to avoid creases and along with all shoes and bikinis and the like it all fits in two little handluggage cases.

my hope is i shall get away for some winter sun at some point this year and instead of panicking about where stuff is and where i can buy stuff at that time of year i have one hand luggage case full of perfect to take away stuff that would virtually be ready to go.

now i just have to try and get brutal with the remaining ton of clothes. i'm actually sick of having too many clothes yet always feeling i have nothing to wear so want to get organised. i need to force myself to get rid of a lot of old coats that i 'might' need one day and the mass of things i keep just in case but never really wear.

i'm going to apply the do i love it? do i wear it? do i feel good in it? approach and try and streamline massively.

I'm trying so hard to have a clear out of things, including clothes. Thus far I've thrown away two pairs of shoes. I've found 17 M&S t shirts, many of which I haven't worn [I tend to wear the older ones I've got]. I also buy clothes when they're on offer, save them for best and never wear them. Got a Laura Ashley wool and cashmere coat that I've never worn [just checked it for moth holes and, thank goodness it's ok]. But I don't have summer/winter clothes..they sort of merge into each other, the exception being beachwear that has it's own box [haven't been on a beach for years]. How can I throw away items of clothing that have memories attached to them, even if I'll never wear them again [not talking about the beach clothes by the way]? The skirt I wore at my daughters wedding that is now out of date for example. I do have room to store it but what's the point?

Yes I've bought a few things in the Boden sale. Plain tee-shirts mainly.

My excuse is that, if one spends £5 in M&S, then parking in free, t shirts are sometimes on offer , so £8 on two t shirts is better than £3.20 car parking!! DH calls it the Mrs Gambol approach

I take obviously summer things off their hangers, fold them up and then -cram- put them tidily away on one of the top shelves, replacing them with autumn/winter things. I do wish I could be more self-restrained, on line sales tend to be my downfall - anyone tempted by the Boden sale that's on at the moment? Oh, and White Stuff, and Crew, and, and, and! I buy what I like randomly, in magpie fashion. Sometimes I despair of myself!

I'm just in the middle of doing my twice yearly clothes 'cull'. Trying to be firm about throwing some away or giving to charity shops.
Then I do a swap of summer clothes for winter clothes in suitcases.

Most of my tee-shirts are also wearable as layers under jumpers or cardis in the winter. By the time spring comes, they will probably be ready for reassignment as dusters. Crop trousers and cotton skirts are stored in the spare room wardrobe which is, admittedly, getting almost as full as the wardrobe in my bedroom. My eight sunhats will be in a big box with all my other hats and scarves.

I put obviously out of season clothes in an old suitcase under our bed and enjoy surprises when I swap. However this was a habit when all our bedrooms were occupied and there are now empty wardrobes, so I may rethink this next time. Seems daft to have empty wardrobes.

I take all the summer things out make sure they are all clean and then fold and put away in plastic boxes which live under the guest bedroom bed. the likelihood is that when I see them again in the spring I put most of them in the charity bag!

I store my summer clothes in a wardrobe in the spare bedroom , also in a chest of drawers and in under bed storage and in my husbands part of the wardrobe and basically anywhere I can find room. I am hopeless and will buy randomly it only has to say sale and I am the first through the door which is why I ended up with 7 black teeshirts

My biggest failing with clothes is keeping things back to wear on "special occasion" that may never happen. I'm not talking party dresses here either. I mean nice jumpers or cardigans . Nice tunics or dresses. I always say to myself "there's no point in wearing that for work or to go to grandmas" , or whatever, but the trouble is I do very little else so the item remains unworn.

I am the same kittylester so you are in good company! I did go to one of those colour experts once and she told me grey and pink are my colours. I am sure she is correct and if I had stuck to her advice, I may have had a co-ordinated wardrobe. My daughter paid a lady to go through her wardrobe, sort it out and then take her shopping. The lady sold any unsuitable, almost new clothes on ebay and they shared the proceeds. It was very successful at the time and I must check when I see my daughter tomorrow if it had long term benefits.
