Some while ago, when walking into a newly painted room, I got white gloss paint on the sleeve of my very favourite cardigan.as is my wont. I tried to get it out with no success then covered it in white spirit and left it. I actually left it for months as I then had a knee operation.
I took it out today and the paint had gone. BUT I have rinsed it about 10 times and it still smells strongly of white spirit. I actually don't mind as I quite like the smell but I think my colleagues, friends and family might not be so keen on it. Can anyone suggest a means of neutralising the smell or do I simply keep on rinsing and hope?

I think hanging it in the fresh air might do it suey.. maybe , worth a try.

You could try a hydrogen peroxide solution. Scroll down this link, it says 50%hp and 50% vinegar for some odours.

I once used it on some jeans where I'd spilt some oily liquid from kippers in a bag and it worked.

Neat Fairy liquid, rubbed gently in and then wash as usual.

Thank you. By dint of lots of washes and addition of conditioner the smell has reduced.

A bit by the by. But I have several children, and eventually, by the time they had reached their teens, I gave up on trying to get stains out of anything, even favorite items.

I used to give it one go only after that, and if it hadnt shifted or needed more time and effort, I gave up on it. I decided that the time and effort for the sake of a very few items a year just wasnt worth it. I found the giving up was very satisfactory!
