ScS and Guardsman insurance

About five and a half years ago, we bought two small reclining leather sofas from ScS (St James Retail Park, Northampton), one an electric recliner and one a manual one.
As they were not cheap, we decided it might be worth taking out the insurance offered by the salesperson. Apart from making the cover sound so good, I am sure he said that if you didn't make a claim within the five-year cover period, then it would be extended for either two or three years, or words to that effect (my memory isn't quite as clear on which of those it was).

However, when a recliner device broke yesterday and I dug out the papers, I find no mention whatsoever of any policy extension. The policy was for five years, full stop. In other words, our cover ended seven months ago.

I know we don't have a leg to stand on, and that it's not even worth the cost of a phone call to either ScS or Guardsman (the insurers) to ask about it, but what I really want to know is, has anyone else has ever been lied to misled in this way by ScS regarding insurance on their furniture?

MamaCaz I would have thought that they would have extended the cover for an extra period of time but at a cost to you, your salesman may have just forgotten to add that bit of detail on when he was talking to you they do seem to have the gift of the gab when they are completing a sale,I know they did similar at DFS when we bought our sofas even though we paid over £2K cash on the day we still got the bill for leather cleaner & upstairs delivery which I was positive the guy said would be free,he denied all knowledge of the conversation when asked.

In the past when we've bought a warranty on an electrical appliance, when it is due to run out we usually got a letter saying you can extend it. Perhaps that's what the salesmen meant. (We don't bother much with these warranties now because they are said to be very bad value for money).

I always check the sale conditions properly because unless something is actually in writing, whatever a salesman might have said to clinch the deal counts for nothing.

I worked for Hoover when these policies first came out. Believe me, they are a 'nice little earner' for the companies.
