Central heating problems Viesmann boiler

Are there any heating engineers who could advice us.

In 2010 during the winter while on holiday our central heating pipes burst and our bungalow was flooded.
We had left the heating on at 15 as advised by the insurance company but unfortunately it was a very cold winter and the boiler in the garage froze.
We found out later from the Viesmann engineer that the engineer who installed the boiler a year previously should have put in a pipe and frost thermostat with the boiler being situated in the garage. Viesmann were very generous and replaced all the damaged parts free of charge.
It took 9 months to get the property back to what it was before the flood, it was a nightmare.
Since then when we have gone away during the winter we have drained the system
Draining the system as created problems when we get back because the system is out of balance.
What is happening is
Some radiators are cold, some warm, some cool, some hot.
We have had the engineer in so many times which costs money and he can't seem to get the system working so that all radiators are hot enough to provide a warm house.
We have had a cleaning solution in a number of times over the years, radiators have been taken of and drainedf, but were found to have no sediment in.
Water flow as been adjusted on each radiator and nothing seems to work. Each radiator as a thermostat on the other end.
This last time when we went away we left the heating on at 15 but the system is no different.
Before we started draining the system it worked perfectly.

What part of the country do you live? There may be somebody on GN who lives near you andknows an excellent plumber, as I do but i live in NW London.

We live in Lincoln.

Our engineer is a Viesmann engineer so lots of experience with this boiler and he is stuck for what to do next.

I am just so fed up with this problem and dread winter coming.

jeanie, I so feel for you. We were badly advised when we changed the boiler on on UK house (1920s, central heating added not sure when, 50s). It was a nightmare- we had several experts cleaning all the system and radiators with the highest power system- and still it filled up with sludge again and blocked the whole system! Time and time again. However, our heating engineers finally told us he only now works with Viesmann, and not the one he installed (can't remember off-hand) as they are the only totally reliable systems and way above the rest- so there is perhaps hope for you. Bonne chance.

I would call Viesmann direct- and ask for a senior representative to come and visit with your heating engineer.

jeanie99 Mon 04-May-15 11:30:05

Our engineer did contact Viesmann leaving a message for an engineer to call him back but they have not contacted him.
I think I'll have to ring them up myself.

jeanie; I have a Viesmann boiler. I'll pm you the details of the family company that I use. They fitted my boiler when everyone else insisted that I had to have a combi boiler; they said they liked a challenge!

Ameeting with a Viesmann senior engineer and your guy will ascertain if it is a problem with his fitting or lcack of experience, etc. Do not wait on him, he may have reasons to 'hide' - and contact Viesman and insist on a senior engineer visit.

I agree granjura I need to speak to a senior engineer and get this sorted before the winter.

Just to make it clear though, the system ran perfectly until our engineer drained the system in 2011.
Since then we have had a problem each year when we go away.
I was so cross this year when we got back and found even though we had left the heating on low it was even worse.
I wasn't too pleased with hubby, he was in when our engineer came to sort it out, I had an appointment.
When I got back home he said it was working. BUT he hadn't insisted the engineer wait to see how hot the rads got, he just left when he started the boiler.
I have lost count of the money we have paid out.
I could scream my husband is no help at all, I have to deal with everyone if there is a problem.
Sorry about that guys but I am so fed up with having to deal with everything myself.
If I try and get support from my daughter she just says well you know what dad is like stop getting stressed about it.

I rang Viesmann today, they suggested I ring a local Veismann engineer as they do not deal with balancing issues.

Rang a local engineer explained the problem he said he was overrun with work but suggested ringing British gas as they have expertise in all system issues.

I was very reluctant to ring as we had a problem with BG about 15 years ago and said I wouldn't go with this company again.
However I've had to reconsider as I am desperate to get this sorted once and for all.

BG said if they could not fix the problem my money would be refunded. It's a fixed price for however long it takes.

I have requested a senior engineer and he will be here tomorrow fingers crossed he can sort it out.

Would not trust BG with a barge pole.

Sorry to be negative but it might be cheaper in the long run to get a new system/ boiler installed.

Rads have been cleaned, and should be ok..Pump?, metal bits in the system, Mag safe?.

Lots of info if you google

"You pays your money, you takes your choice".

We've been with BG care for most of 40 years. Never had any problems, call outs in the middle of the night to old inherited system, replacement bits and completely new systems. One in a 10 roomed house, and they put it in in 2 days! Mind you didn't have to strip out the old system.

However, no company is infallible ! x

I thought British Gas didn't deal with Viesmanns; when they came out to give me a quote for a new system the man who came to my house was so patronising I was never going to use them and the price he quoted was extortionate, which is why I used the company I mentioned. It'l be interesting to see how you get on with BG [they were also very rude on the phone when I stopped using them as my energy supplier sad].

update

BR came as promised but he had such a problem getting everything working,

Spent 4 hours on the first day then went off to another job saying we needed a pump to help the flow.

Installed pump on the second visit, most of the rads were now working after another balance except one.
Checked the flow there was a blockage under the floor(our pipes are in concrete).
How he had the patience to mess with this I will not know and thank god we were not paying by the hour.

4 and half hour later the system was working with all rads on.

He said the design of the system wasn't good but made worst when the extension was carried out and the cold rad had been tagged onto the old system and the rest were separate from this.
The cold rad was at the end of the system and then there was the blockage.
Each time we had got someone in to balance the system they had just tweaked it instead of starting from scratch and had made it continually worse as the years had gone on.

Fingers crossed the temperatures will be fine when the winter comes if not I will be ringing BR again.

silly me BG not BR

J52 Thu 14-May-15 10:08:17

Pleased BG got you sorted. We had relatives who always had a cold radiator in one room. The eventual, sorting out gas engineer found out that the radiator wasn't connected to the system!

X

Unbelievable!!!

jollyg Thu 14-May-15 13:20:33

Glad its sorted.

There is a very good Utube on balancing rads and it also mentions a new pump, you have to get the water round the rads for it to circulate
