just looking for others opinions on Dado rails...I think you either love them or hate them,we used to have them in the other house which was an older house so suited them.

I am no in a modern house (15 yrs old sort of little mews style house.
I have just stripped all the long staircase wall of paper, got all the paste off ready for emulsioning at some time, but!! it does look really bare, its open plan, the stairs are int hen lounge, and I had though of emulsioning all the stairs and lounge then papering the chimney breast wall instead of papering the stairs wall (its a big job to paper the stairs) wall and struggled a bit last time....hence I was just going to paint it this time and paper the chimney wall,

Then I thought of dado rail half way up the wall so I could paint the top half and paper the bottom half which would be easy to do.

But my question is?? are dado rails really old fashioned? will I date my home putting them up?

Do you have dado rails? have you ahd them and taken them down? any opinions for or against welcome smile

DS and DDIL have used F&B in their flat. I think it's Mousesback in their living room, it looks lovely.

Farrow and Ball are expensive , but worth it in my opinion. They are made in Uk and not shipped in from China. They have more authentic ( not synthetic) pigment So the colour is more accurate and concentrated. I think it goes on way better than Dulux and is easier to clean off the rollers etc. you can try to get the colour mixed up in Homebase or wherever but try the 2 against each other and you will see the difference. All their colours are understated and don't date, look good in modern. Period or retro settings. No I don't work for them and I do use other paint as well! But if you are doing a room you use all the time and won't be doing it again for a few years then it's worth getting something you really like.

shock I didn't mean to be rude to you susied!!! blush

It doesn't go on so easily as Dulux. (DH said, the one time we tried it) I try to match the colour with a mixed specially Dulux one.

I think it might have a ,somehow, "National Trust" look to the colours. Or just very up yourself posh.

Well you wouldn't choose a horrible colour, would you? grin

Why is Farrow & Ball paint so expensive? Seriously.

suzied Sun 21-Jun-15 17:26:20

I wouldn't put dado rails up. Too fussy and would look dated in a modern house. I go with a nice farrow and ball colour and carefully chosen prints.

My latest bugbear is baths, having spent a few days at a super B&B in all respects other than the bath was uncomfortable. Like sinks now, baths are styled to look good but with no regard to things like being able to lie back comfortably etc. Plus the fashion for baths in bedrooms; all I can think about is how damp everything will get.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 17:18:16

We have got one (real!) leather brown armchair which is really far too big for the room. But soooo comfy!

merlotgran Sun 21-Jun-15 17:15:15

Mine don't match either. Whenever I watch a homestyle programme on the telly (not as if we're short of 'em) I shudder when I see those huge black or dark brown fake leather sofas crammed into a small room.

We just have a three seater sofa and two upcycled wing back armchairs in our sitting room. If we need more seating we have bean bags, floor cushions and a cream moroccan pouffe. The oldies (us) get first dibs on the chairs grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 17:04:03

My sofa and chairs don't match. Not keen on three piece suites.

More by luck than judgement on my part then tegan

Tegan Sun 21-Jun-15 16:58:10

It's quite fashionable now to have chairs and sofas that don't match [at least, that's what the lady in the local furniture shop told me when she was trying to sell me a chair and sofa that didn't match hmm]!

whitewave Sun 21-Jun-15 16:35:16

I also have a stripped sofa and a plain chair!! That probably gives a lot of the grans the shiversgrin

I think that I am very retro in my tastes - I also have patterned carpets - well rugs actually - did have plain cream/white in the sitting room for a few years to go with my art deco theme but now have changed to pattern.

merlotgran Sun 21-Jun-15 15:29:27

I don't like wallpaper either and dividing a wall with a dado rail so one half is emulsioned and the other half papered is definitely dated but some houses suit that style.

I would always go for a good quality emulsion paint in a muted shade. A feature wall can be done in a darker shade rather than wallpaper with an ' in yer face' pattern. I don't think plain walls are clinical because you will have plenty of choice for colour when it comes to soft furnishings.

Like jingl I use pictures to show off a wall. Frames can be updated by using a chalk paint which compliments the colour of the wall then waxing them to give depth.

Another advantage of paint over paper is you can play around with sample pots until you get the effect you want and you can always change your mind without breaking the bank.

Bikergran...if you want Dado rails...you have them.

Seriously fashion in décor is quite eclectic and any 'Home' type magazine will show you numerous themes...be it Scandi, Country house, or City loft style. Go with what you fancy and in any case modern Dados can be 'stick-on' so you will not be doing anything that cannot be undone.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:23:16

True. grin

whitewave Sun 21-Jun-15 13:19:50

jing Got floral pics in the dining room. Landscape in the sitting room. Love wallpaper. Got a lovely subtle figured sort of sea green in the sitting room which I would have again.

Hate plain painted walls. Too clinical for me. grin

Good job we are all different just think how boring it would be otherwise - we would have nothing to talk about.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:13:43

Really well done modern floral pics are good. Nothing fussy though. And non-reflective glass for the non-canvas ones.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 13:12:03

Hate wallpaper. Nice clean looking emulsion for me. And not travel pics please! grin

hildajenniJ Sun 21-Jun-15 13:10:56

Go for it if you like them biker. We had them in our old house. I don't think I would have them now. Extra dusting! I went right off wallpaper, and now prefer just plain painted walls. I think I am becoming boring!

whitewave Sun 21-Jun-15 13:09:20

I love wall paper. I have a collection of pictures in the hall all of places that we have visited over the years. We bring one back everywhere we go - well obviously not if it the same place, and some places we went to we couldn't get a picture - like the Maldives - the island was so tiny - no shops!!

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 21-Jun-15 12:55:50

I wouldn't put in dado rails! Not in a modern mews house. Emulsion the lot in a background kind of colour, and then put up a good collection of pictures, canvases, decorative mirror or two. And leave it. Don't mess with wallpaper either.

tanith Sun 21-Jun-15 12:41:35

We used to have them in our other house but I must admit I find them dated now. They look ok in a certain kind of house but not in something modern, but thats just my opinion lots of people like them and if you like it go for it.

mcem Sun 21-Jun-15 12:35:31

My flat is victorian and high-ceilinged but the dado rail in the sitting room was not original and I removed that. The hall was a bit boring so I had dado rail installed with victorian-style anaglypta under and plain toning paper above. Same colour in different shades - darkish carpet, medium shade between high skirting and dado, pale shade above. Has proved easy to keep.
Hated the sitting-room decor with bright pink below and ditsy roses above! That all had to go!
