Southwell - do you recommend moving there?

Southwell is a very nice place which I enjoy visiting, but the flooding problem is a concern. Apart from that I would be happy to live there.
It has frequent links to Nottingham and Newark for shopping ,but does lack some shops such as a greengrocer. I know there is a market but not sure what kind of stalls are there.

Thanks Tegan, I guess that anywhere will change with time, just trying to make the best choice now and for the immediate future.

We didn't go there this year; we usually go to see the Morris Dancing through the streets. We once followed the Gate to Southwell which culminated with the black faced Morris Dancers dancing in the Minster [that was wicked on several levels!]. There's a brilliant folk club in one of the villages; Fairport are playing there [or have played there] but I can't remember the name of it. The whole place doesn't flood though; you need to choose your area [the S.O. will know more than me about it as he has friends there and is a Nottingham lad]. Every time The Bramley Apple is refurbished it seems to flood again, so that's a part of the place to avoid! Rumour has it that the racetrack will close down in a couple of years, now that they're building all weather tracks at Catterick and Newcastle sad.

Thank you both for your comments, they are really helpful. We had a look round when the folk festival was on, as live music fans that would be a plus. A bit worried about flooding though...

Flooding is the major problem there; as soon as they recover from one flood another one happens. It's quite isolated and the roads around it get very icy in wintertime, so, even though it's quite close to Nottingham they're still not roads I wouldn't like to travel on in winter. Having said that, I absolutely love the place. It has a great tradition of folk music and there is always music in the pubs [even when it isn't the folk festival]. It always amuses me that the racetrack and the workhouse are so close to each other. It's so posh that there is graffitti [sp] in Latin [honestly!!]. The villages roundabout it are gorgeous too. I often go on rightmove and fantasise about living there, but it's too far from my family.

I know somebody who lived there. He and his family love it.
In fact when I knew him, he had just got a job in York and he stayed in my guest house during the week and went home at the weekend.
His eldest daughter was at university in York, so they were going to move there, but his other daughter and son liked Southwell so much that they decided to buy a flat in York for him and his daughter, and he would keep commuting for at least ten years until his son went to university.
Last time I saw him was five years ago, and it was still working well.

I am thinking of moving to "Southwell" near Newark, do people recommend it? Any major plans that should put me off? What about flooding? Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
