Knife grinders

I have tried sharpening my secateurs on the knife sharpener ( crossed steel sort from JL). It's not very effective any suggestions?

I have resorted to buying new ones.

I have a Chantry knife sharpener. I originally bought it for DD but she couldn't get on with it so she gave it to me. It's excellent. Best I've ever used.

DH sharpens anything that needs it including scissors on an old steel that's been handed down the family.

My old butcher used do my knives if I asked very nicely but I've never asked him to do scissors. DH has a sharpener from Lakeland that works very well for him, the thing is he only does the carving knives and never remembers that I use my knives every blessed day! [cross]

Whatever happened to the door-to-door knife grinders? I used to have my scissors regularly sharpened by these very useful gentlemen and sometimes my kitchen knives as well. I can't remember when they disappeard from the scene, but when I was using a pair of good quality but rather blunt dressmaking scissors the other day, I wondered how to get them sharpened which led me to wonder about the knife grinders. And how do I now get my scissors sharpened?
