Adjustable beds

My brother's father in law went to a mobility shop to try out adjustable beds . He has COPD and because of chest infections which required 5 courses of antibiotics he couldn't sleep in his old bed. So slept in a recliner chair. His bed is a single but since having it he has never slept better.

The mobility shop had different ones with different mattresses . It was expensive but what price do you put on a good night's sleep and your health.

Buy the best one your can afford. Might be worth looking to see if your local council or occupational therapy department know of any grants you can get to help towards the cost as it's for health reasons. I know if you have to alter your bathroom for health and or mobility reasons you get the VAT back for the fittings that's toilet ,basin and tap, shower and cubicle, walk in bath or bath hoist. But not tiles or fitting. Plus it must be fitted by a professional tradesman.

Memory foam keeps the heat so fine if you are cold blooded, a nightmare if you want to be cool.
Adjustable beds are very heavy and very expensive. There are always people giving away such beds on Gumtree or similar. I suggest getting a second hand pair of bases and replacing the mattresses with new ones. We have a super King duvet but also two singles which are never used.

Just come across this now, I bought an adjustable bed recently and after spending a mountain of time researching them we choose this bed alpinehc.co.uk/adjustable-beds. Me and Phil really like it as we can both watch TV and I can read whilst he's having his afternoon nap . This company has lots of fabric choices which meant we could get the bed in a very similar fabric to our bedroom curtains. Recommend giving them a call if anyone is still looking for an electric bed.

I've got a new adjustable bed arriving on Friday and feel very nervous as I ordered it after trying only two beds.
I have disc problems so I thought it might help with getting in bed and also sitting up. I would have tried several shops but my back was so painful so I couldn't travel far.
Fingers crossed for Friday .

I have a tempur-pedic split king adjustable bed. It also has the massage feature. I never use either feature, but my DH often raises the head of the bed to sleep better. The only con is that the base of each side of the bed is VERY heavy because of the motors needed. We recently had to move the bed out of the room to get new carpet and it was a major task. It is a high quality bed and was expensive, but it worth it because it is great for sleeping. I go to sleep and stay asleep.

I am looking at electric adjustable beds, as my husband has difficulty getting in and out and changing position from sitting to lying. I'm also attracted to the idea for myself.
But how do you choose? Prices seem to range from under £500 to over £5000! I'm happy to pay for quality, but not for excessive advertising and hype.
Any help out there! I'm looking for a dual king-size.

I dont like memory foam mattresses either, they are so hot and therefore uncomfortable.

When we stay in germany the flat we rented had an 'electric ' bed with two 3' single mattresses and separate controls which raise feet and head end, snd also a bit which raised and supported the knees. Helps getting out of bed Or if you want to read or have breakfast in bed. Dont recall any problems with the middle bit of the mattresses.
as jackie says the beds are usually singles on one base with your own single quilt. No arguments a bout pinching the duvet. They call our double beds french beds but not many have them, well nOt in our experience anyway.
I like it and am looking for similar here, as our bed is getting on a bit so will need replacing soon.

Just changed from memory foray to a pocket Spring mattress., much, much cooler and comfortable.

I have noticed a lot of my friends find memory foam a bit too warm, especially after "the Change" we go throught. I hope this may help other ladies when looking for adjustable beds as I have just purchased one; Larissa and we were able to get a splendid super king size adjustable bed, the extra room has made all the difference - I don't feel my partner get up in the middle of the night and it feels just like a traditional mattress - not foams! I hope it helps anyone who is looking for a change of bed!

We have slept in an adjustable bed at my daughter's and didn't find it very comfortable. There is definitely a ridge in the middle. It is a double bed so maybe a king size might be better.

By the way, we used to sleep on a memory foam mattress and due to my hot flushes decided to change the bed. We spent a lot of money on a mattress with natural fibres and a mattress protector which was pure cotton and wool. It made no difference to the hot flushes!

dustyangel - we have one large fitted sheet, which I bought online so I could check the size and depth. I think two separate ones would be very difficult to put on the mattresses. There is an obvious place where the mattresses meet, but the advantages so outweigh this that it is not a problem!

Here in Germany it has always been the norm to have two mattresses, each with their own sheet, and each partner has their own duvet, too. That way, you can have a mattress and a duvet to suit you. No one is really bothered by the "visitor's slit" (doesn't sound so naughty in German!). In fact, you often have two beds pushed together so you have the frame of the bed in there, too*. Nowadays, smaller double beds with single mattresses are becoming available, but the Germans are used to having loads of space and certainly don't "get" the idea of a single duvet for 2 people.

We have always had a single, large mattress, (and a king size duvet) but we've just recently bought new mattresses and the adjustable base to go underneath them. They were inordinately expensive, and I don't think my husband has ever used his to raise his legs or to sit up. I use it to watch films on my laptop in bed, and always raise both ends to take off and put on the sheets when I change them. You press the button to lower the ends and hey presto! the bed is made! The salesman demonstrated to us how relaxing it is to lay on the bed and raise your top half and then slowly lower it. By raising and then slower lowering the leg end, you can relieve a troubled or overfed tummy.

I had to buy new fitted sheets - the single sheets we had up to then for the kids' beds were not high enough for the 26 cm deep mattresses!

I am still not convinced it was worth going to a specialist shop for all this kit. In the end, it's what you're comfortable on, and that could be a cheap mattress on a bit of chipboard for some.

* Don't ask me how they cuddle up!

Nanabelle What do you do about the sheets? i.e Do you have single bottom sheets or one big one, with or without a line down the middle?

I can sleep on a line but DH struggles due to his back. We've recently bought a new bed and mattress. My advice is to try lots of mattresses then leave it for that day having made of a note of the one's you liked. Return a few more times testing the mattresses on your list and gradually you will choose the one you like the best.

The reason we did it this way was that DH's back began to ache whilst we were testing. We wanted to find the one that didn't make him ache so had to test from fresh each time.

We don't have adjustable beds but we do have a super king, which is basically made up of two 3ft beds, zipped up the middle! ( we don't bother with zipping the mattresses up now, as they don't move anyway). The join in the middle doesn't bother us and we have been able to have different types of mattress - eg. firm or not so firm!! It is wonderful to have so much space in the bed after years of a 4' 6" (which is less than a baby/toddler has in a cot!). We also have single duvets, which again allows for mine being thrown off regularly and dh snuggling with it nearly over his head! Luckily we have a very large bedroom to allow for such a big bed.
Definitely go and try out lots and see how they feel and work. Have fun!

I heard that there are some good mattresses that you can find such as ebay, amazon, or other famous sites. They have good ventilation which can help you stay cool when you are sleeping.

Make sure you choose suitable materials in order to avoid allergic problems. Unfortunately, I don't remember, and I am searching the best ones from suggestion.

Go and play on the electric beds in Benson's. You're right about memory foam mattresses. They can make you very hot.

You can buy special sheets which are stitched in middle section and independent for rest. Will tra to get a link.
