dreading winter

I know it is summer but I am really not looking forward to the winter. I live in a small ten year old house and really struggled to feel warm enough last winter even though my wall thermometer told me it was at least twenty two degrees. The insulation and double glazing is good and the only thing missing is a fire. There is no chimney so I can't have a gas fire and wonder if an electric fire and a fake fireplace will make me feel warmer psychologically. I do dress warmly and even resorted to wearing a hat and fingerless gloves in the house when reading. I do go out walking most days and don't struggle with the cold when out. I am 74 years old and suffer with the odd hot flush. Help

Winter has arrived already here (southern England) There was condensation on the windows this morning and I'm about to go and get a blanket to sit under as I'm so cold my hands have gone blue.

apricot, all I can say is "luxury" grin

Here in the north west, I'm not convinced winter ever went away. Ok we had a few warm days in April but this weekend I put the central heating on, as did several friends I later discovered.

Anya,(post of 14:21:57) I love it! That's exactly what it feels like here, but I couldn't think what had gone wrong, and a failed installation just didn't occur to me! Thank you for giving DH and me a laugh.

Anya Wed 29-Jul-15 20:11:36

Thanks * Wheniwasyourage* it's good to laugh sunshine

It's like shivering - it helps to warm you up as well! grin

I have a fleecy electric overblanket which makes a lovely warm cocoon around me on winters evenings. It came from Lakeland a few years ago. You can set the temperature and set the timer to go off in case you fall asleep under it , as i often do !

I am not looking forward to winter as I work out of doors so it means several layers of jumpers tshirts and waistcoats etc and the usual 2 pairs of knickers and 2 pairs of socks.

Added to this is the cost of a new jacket which must be waterproof and boots of which the cost is really high. I have to go to the outdoor shop for my stuff and I just dread it as I am supposed to look smart too and not as if Im about to climb Mount Everest. I long for my retirement.

Ana Fri 31-Jul-15 21:02:42

I thought you did market research ethel - why would you need two pairs of knickers and socks...? confused

merlotgran Fri 31-Jul-15 21:06:19

Have you tried thermal underwear, ethel. Keeps me toasty and I work outside as well.

etheltbags1 Fri 31-Jul-15 21:06:26

Ana its b.....y cold out knocking on doors in all weathers. I worked at -6degrees in 2010 and my hair was frozen.

Ana Fri 31-Jul-15 21:07:45

Minus 6 degrees? Where on earth do you live? grin

etheltbags1 Fri 31-Jul-15 21:08:21

I do wear thermal underwear merlot, just been given a thermal vest by my mother and I wear leggings under my trousers. (see post on versatile clothing). Ive tried hand warmers too but I keep dropping them.

etheltbags1 Fri 31-Jul-15 21:09:49

Ana have you forgotten the winter of 2010 when we had snow which lay for weeks, my car thermometer said minus 6 one night. I have to be a tough gal to do my job.

janerowena Fri 31-Jul-15 21:26:09

We regularly go down to 12C here, in central East Angular. We thought last winter was lovely and warm, because we only went down to -10C twice.

Ana Fri 31-Jul-15 21:31:38

I do remember as far back as 2010 ethel, but where I live the snow only lasted a few days.

I appreciate that it must sometimes be a bit parky walking around housing estates etc. in winter but two pairs of knickers - really? confused

merlotgran Fri 31-Jul-15 21:33:54

That's one hell of a panty line, ethel.....and with leggings? shock

Coolgran65 Fri 31-Jul-15 22:51:40

Indeed I remember the winter of 2010. My car was buried in snow for 2 weeks. DH parked his car on the main road. Family was home for Christmas and we didn't have enough wellington boots and shops were sold out. DH accompanied DIL to his car, she wore my wellies, then came back with the wellies for the next person smile
A brave heart indeed to work outdoors in this ethel

I have a gas fire for when I need it on, but I have lived here for over five years and only used it a dozen or so times. I keep long wheatbags on the radiators, and wrap one round my neck if I feel cold. 125 mcg of thyroxine as I had my thyroid removed 35 years ago. I did feel cold a lot until I had my thyroxine put up last month.

The winter of 2010 still makes me giggle. We lived on a hill. I walked out side and started sliding down the road. I put my arms out and there I was spread eagled (straight arms and legs still upright) trying to direct myself to a wall where I knew I would stop.

Greyduster Sat 01-Aug-15 09:40:41

In 2010 we picked up a new car the day that it started to snow here, parked it in the drive and didn't see it again for another two weeks!! Very frustrating!

Dear Rojon. According to our son 22 degrees is the perfect temperature, winter and summer, so it is a shame you still shiver despite the fact you have a modern house that is easy to heat.

I agree with Gill T57 that you should see your GP and ask for a thyroid test. For some inexplicable reason this is not a routine blood test yet an underactive thyroid can wreak havoc with ALL your vital organs (as I know to my cost) and apart from affecting your body temperature can lead to all sorts of other problems which, if not treated, can lead to really dangerous consequences.

Don't forget. Doctors are there to help us. They are not paid to sit in their consulting rooms with no patients. So do make an appointment now. Your problem may not be an underactive thyroid but something totally different but just as serious.

Good luck and enjoy the winter. J x

rojon I feel your pain. The older I get the more difficult I find winter. Like you I do everything to keep warm but it's just not enough. I long for summer and really blossom with energy in the warm weather. I understand why so many old people spend the winter in Spain etc. rojon I'm game if you are grin

etheltbags1 Sat 01-Aug-15 21:46:55

ana I sometimes wear a panty griddle as well.

etheltbags1 Sat 01-Aug-15 21:47:27

ginny Sat 01-Aug-15 22:28:16
