Duvet

Petra,the cover def too big for the duvet,think I am gonna go with Tiggypiro suggestion and sew down each side,hopefully that'll work,thanks all for replying.

Scooter58. It sounds to me as if it's the other way round. It sounds as if the duvet is too big for the cover. If the the cover were too big the duvet would still lay flat.

That is such a good idea Stansgran. Not only cheaper, but saves a lot of messing about - no need to make a 'sandwich' of three layers then bind them, you could simply place the two layers right sides together and sew, then turn them right way out and topstitch. Love it! Going to do this with my next quilt.

And no, I don't have a Ponden Mill nearby, but I think I may be able to buy it at Trago Mills (a SW company) who are not far from us at Newton Abbot.

Indinana I've been buying fleece as a backing for wheelchair and baby quilts . If you have a Ponden Mill near you I've bought purple and bright red for £3.50 and a pale blue and white one with snowflakes for backing a Christmas quilt. They are sale items but I've just washed them this morning and there was no shrinkage. About 150cm is the measurement. Certainly cheaper than wadding and backing and this was recommended to me by the assistant in the quilt shop.

I bought a single brushed cotton duvet cover recently, thankfully for the fabric, not for use as a duvet cover. I say thankfully, because when I washed a piece I was going to use as a baby quilt backing it shrank drastically - a good 3 inches in both length and width.
Maybe that's why some manufacturers make them oversize, to allow for shrinkage?

I've got one like that for a single bed. Seems to be ok for a thick winter duvet but useless for a thinner one. Bought mine from Sainsburys [I think]. In retrospect I should have taken it back to the shop and asked for a refund.

I had this very same problem with a double duvet I bought. I solved the problem by sewing down each side of the cover about 2" from the edge so it now looks as if it has an extra bit on the sides and doesn't look 'wrong'. Problem solved but I do wonder why it was so big in the first place - it was too small for a king size duvet.
