Any suggestions for cleaning/returning to almost new the metal collars around the gas burners on my cooker hob please? I vaguely remember my old dad putting them to soak in a bath of caustic soda - dangerous but effective - but I don't want to risk it if I've remember wrongly!

The only thing that ever worked for me was scrubbing the hell out of them with a brillo pad, but there was always an odd spot that was too stubborn to shift which i had to turn a blind eye to. Don't have the problem now as my induction hob just needs a quck wipe over with a damp cloth to look like new. Having said that, i miss my gas hob. Nothing to match them for controllable cooking.

I used Brillo when I had such a cooker but it drove me so mad I changed it to a completely smooth electric top that you just clean with Hob Brite - it looks so much tidier in my small kitchen.
