Soft close toilet seats

Trouble is with most modern seats the fixings have a lot of plastic in them - indeed we have had some where all the fixings are plastic and these just get brittle and break. Other visible parts often degrade too and look awful and they seem to get loose easily.
The only seats I have ever had which did not need replacing were two which came with very expensive toilets. I was worried about the last one as it was one of those toilets where all the pipe work was hidden within the toilet design - however once the seat is on it would be impossible to replace it without taking out the toilet too as the fixings are hidden inside! Luckily we moved house before that point was reached.

Yes the default position is down for our toilet seat lids. More to do with the danger of things falling into the loo that anything else.

What has amazed me most about this thread is the mention of lasting a few (6, 4) years as being a good sign in toilet seats/lids. I'd expect a toilet seat and lid to last at least thrity years before I thought its lasting worth a mention... like my mum's downstairs loo whose seat has lasted all the fifty-one years she has lived in the same house, and it wasn't at all new when we moved in! It might be the original from 1938 when the house was built.

It's made of wood.

The one upstairs, which was 'posher', had to be replaced at some point but it was probably about fifty years old by that time.

We always close the lid on our loo, house rule.

On Saturday DGS asked whose was the green toothbrush and DH told him it was his then asked DGS why he wanted to know. DGS confessed he had dropped the green one into the loo so DH said not to worry because he would get a new one out of the cupboard. There was a slight pause and it was as if a light suddenly switched on and DH asked when this accident had happened. DGS thought for a while and then said he rather thought it was on Monday.

I've heard of the flushing the loo germs thing. Keep toothbrush away from enemies!

Kepp your toothbrush on the other side of the room, or invert a tumbler over it.

Ours lids are always down except in use, its not the rats I worry about its all the bacteria whooshing round the bathroom and landing on my toothbrush that bothers me.

A friend had a rat in her loo, which came up the piping. Luckily the scrabbling sounds alerted her so it didn't get out. I always make sure my lid is down now. ?

I read that too jings but the reason I always close our toilet lids is because I know someone who had a rat come up through her toilet into the bathroom. The plumber she got to come and check how that had happened, given the S-bend, told her that it is not all that uncommon. My lids stay firmly closed except when in use!

How have we survived with all the germs whooshing about? - I have never heard that one before!

I read somewhere that if you don't close the lid before you flush, germs can whoosh through the house. And the floor can get sprinkles on it from the flush water. Rule in our house. Always has been.

Are you telling me that you all close the lids on your toilets? I don't think I have ever done that!

I know it isn't hygienic but I've made cardboard gaskets to stop my loo seat moving around. My loo is a very odd shape and when the original pine seat needed replacing I found that the only seat that fitted was a very cheap soft close one. In fact, I don't know of any loo seats that don't seem to move about and break after a while. I think the Dyson man should look into redesigning toilet seats. Porcelain and plastic or metal don't seem to work well together when there is a lot of sideways movement .

I've had mine for quite a few years and it still 'soft closes'. My big annoyance is that the whole seat seems to move and needs readjusting quite frequently.
I have bought new fixings but the seat still moves however tightly I fix them . It's just me that uses it now so probably don't really need 'soft close' anymore anyway.
