New sofa; am now in shock....

I've finally taken the plunge and bought a new sofa, chair and footstool. I've hated my current 3 piece ever since I bought it and, when I returned home this week after being away for a while I felt as if I was walking into a charity shop. The trouble is it's big and ugly but incredibly well made and comfortable, and the pattern doesn't show any marks. I've never wanted a life where I was worried about a sofa being damaged; the dog, in her dotage is now allowed to sleep on it and I fall asleep on it most nights watching telly. Now that it's going I feel all sentimental and attached to it [we've been together a long time]. Assuming that a charity shop will take it in I must make sure it's one not too near to where I live or I'll have to keep visiting it. At least, unlike a smaller item, I won't be tempted to buy it back. I'm now convinced that, as soon as the new one arrives, the village will flood and it will be destroyed. I think I'm in a state of shock over it all. I'll be a chair down but I want a chair in a different style [Parker Knoll Westbury]so I'll have to look out for one. I think it was seeing Mary [of Giles and Mary on gogglebox] that made me want a footstool.I've been looking at new sofas and chairs for ages but can't believe I've finally done it shock....

I know how you feel. We really need to get rid of our corner group. It's a burgundy red colour and rather faded around the edges. Some of the springs have sprung, and it goes boinggg when you sit down but it is still very comfortable, and my old dog loves it, and has her own special place on it. We are having the room decorated and have chosen a new carpet, so it will have to go.

I am very nosy and googled the Westbury. It is super.
We had Parker Knoll many years ago and eventually had it recovered by them. They did a total refurbishment on it and it came back like a new suite. I hope you have many happy years with it..

I haven't got the Westbury but the [I think] Cavendish. When I started measuring up I was surprised at how large the Westbury was. However, the shop where I've bought the sofa from often have Westbury chairs and I've never sat on anything more comfortable. The sofa and chair are leather and I'm hoping to get a Westbury chair in a nice fabric; the shop did have one for ages and I used to go and sit in it whenever I passed by...I wish I'd bought it now. I used to describe the fabric on it as 'so ugly it's beautiful'. The shop's called 'The Unloved' and they've put signs on my sofa and chair saying 'Loved' but I now feel my old sofa should have an 'unloved' sign on it sad.

I bought two Parker Knoll recliner chairs in a sale in 1977.

We replaced an older 3piece suite with a new similarly shaped chair and settee and refurbished the Parker Knoll chairs in the same fabric we had chosen for our three piece suite.

I cant sit comfortably in soft chairs with poor back support so the upright position suits me fine.

Ooh, we have got to travel that road too Tegan. We have given away our sofa to a young couple and they love it. DD went into mourning when she discovered we had given it away as she had so many memories embedded into that sofa and it was so comfortable. sad However it was really old and we do need a new one and DH and I both need new armchairs. We want riser recliners in the right sizes for each of us and we have a friend who keeps asking when he can have the old armchairs. So why can't I just do it? As we downsized we have another small suite which is adequate at the moment so it is not urgent but I just can't get myself to go and try out some chairs without it seeming so disloyal somehow! hmm

I spend far too much time in my riser recliner. Huge charity shop bargain, very clean and great condition for £50.00

Tegan, yes I understand - we got a new sofa last Autumn and I did feel sorry to see the old, battered, but very comfy one go. I think I form attachments !!!

Has your old sofa got the fire-safety tags on it? Without them a charity shop may not be interested. We have a nearby firm / charity called 'Necessary Furniture' who will take items without the tags and resell them.

Hope all the delivery and departure times go smoothly for you and that your new furniture fits. I soon got over my remorse when I started to enjoy the pure comfort and luxury of the new one smile.

The shop sells ex showroom display stuff nina which is why you have to snap up what they get as soon as it arrives and, with leather they don't always have a sofa and chair in matching colours. That's why I had to make a decision rather quickly [although I have been planning to replace 'old faithful' for quite a while].

Tegan as soon as the old one is out of the door, I guarantee you will forget all about it. I felt the same when we got rid of our piano. But as soon as it was gone I immediately started to enjoy how good the room looked without it.

Enjoy your new sofa. Good luck with finding the chair.
