Returning faulty Goods

What is it with men who won't stand up for themselves.

Why is it always us women who have to do all the complaining.

I also have one of those who won't complain about anything.

It's silly and stupid. You have to stand up,for your rights.

Barmyoldbat - I know exactly what you mean about Tesco's. I have had numerous problems over the last few years returning faulty goods to them. I think their problem is that they have got so big,they think they are above the law. I just don't bother to shop there any more. Their customer service is absolutely awful.

I have no problem returning a faulty item. Dh on the other hand would die of embarrassment. After many years he has got to the stage where he will accompany me, but wouldn't do it himself.
I stand my ground, politely, usually have a print out of the Sale of Goods Act in my bag. Ask for Manager if necessary, and can't actually recall a time when it hasn't worked.

Usually my job to return stuff or complain, or in fact deal with any awkward situation as OH has the perfect excuse that my French is far better than his. Let out clause to my mind and really p---s me off sometimes. He even tries it on with English speaking or English people, especially when it involves using the phone. I think he is degenerating since we lived here.

Of course you were right to return the kettle. I have no problem returning things that do not live up to their promise. You must approach customer service with the correct attitude though. It doesn't help to resolve things if you go in angry and shouting. Have a clear idea of the problem and what you would like done about it.
Most reputable firms are happy to either refund or at least replace the item.

I'm not good at returning things but I would if it was something that failed early in it's life. As long as I know that I'm in the right I can fight as well as the next person.

My sister however is at a whole new level!
Years ago when she did child-minding she acquired a twin buggy from a skip outside someones house, used it well for a year or so when something went wrong with it. Without so much as a blush she marched it into Mothercare (make of said buggy) and complained ... they gave her a brand spanking new double buggy even though her model was years old!

My friend's son paid £200 for a designer cardigan whose sleeve lining was faulty. Her husband said he would return it, as she would only cause trouble. The shop said there was nothing wrong with it, so he just stood at the cash desk and showed the garment to every customer!
Sadly, the shop manager called the police, and the nearest cops were on horseback! So much for her causing trouble.

P.S. Cops advised him to go home, and he accepted a credit note.

I hate complaining, but in case of warranty issues and/or unfair treatment will stick to my guns. DH is really good at it, but doesn't do people and normally leaves me to deal with complaints. Tend to buy most things from Amazon and normally find their returns service excellent. But won't pay for extended warranty - only once used this for hi-fi system and on that occasion worth the money. Remember that goods have to be suitable for purpose, as described etc, so normally you're entitled to your money back if electrical goods go wrong within the first year or so.

Of course you were right to return it. If everyone was like your DH and just put up with shoddy workmanship, there would be a rapid downward slide in said workmanship!

Yes you did, I would have returned it too.

Yes you have a legal right, British 1 year, but under EU it's 5 years to return any goods that are not up to the job. My fridge of 6 months broke a week before Christmas which I had bought from John Lewis 6 months before. So I put it in the car drove to JL and told them the problem. They said they couldn't give me a emplacement u till the engineer had been out to see it which would have been Christmas Eve! Not good enough said I in my best voice, company policy said JL, I want to speak to your manager said I. Well off they went, never saw the manager but was informed I could go and choose another fridge that they had in stock at no extra charge and take it away with me. Job done Christmas gammon so were safe! Never at any shop have I had a problem, except Tescos.

I think you were right in returning it.My OH also gets embarrassed about returning things he always gets me to do it, he used to apologise to the assistant so now I don't let him come with me.

I think you were absolutely right. If people put up with shoddy products and service that will become the norm.

Well yes aggie I did wonder if he knew something about the kettle that | didn't. I had told him I'd only carefully wiped it over with a soft cloth and a drop of water but he didn't say a word hmm so not like him. I can't take my eyes off it when I'm in kitchen it looks lovely again.

My husband always stays outside when I return anything, he finds it embarrassing. One year I returned a pair of boots from the year before I think the zip had broken he couldn't believe I had the nerve to return them! I was the one smiling when I came out of the shop with new replacement boots.

Of course you are right , why on earth would you put up with a spotty kettle , paint wouldn't stick anyway and it would have started to rust where the enamel was missing . Do you think OH has been bumping the kettle on the tap causing the damage ? hence his reluctance to return it
