Valances

There are elasticated valances on Ebay. They come either gathered or box pleated, which are the neatest.
I have drawers in my divan base, which have been scratched by the cat and look ugly, so need covering. I have a box pleated valance which covers the base. I rarely wash it because, like others I have difficulty moving it. I think I might convert it to a collar type. The casters on my bed are jammed , so I can't move it for cleaning behind or beneath. DDs will be disgusted when they have to clear my house after I have 'gone'!

We have sheets with valance attached. I think I bought them at Linens Direct, online. The sheets are shaped and have 'corners' and so stay put on the mattress. Just for the record, I got married in the 60s and have never ironed a sheet, duvet cover or pillowcase. I'd been married for years before I even discovered that people did.

I really don't see the purpose of them.

I don't like valences much, but our naughty dog forced the issue!

I have a bottom sheet with an attached valence but as Indinana says you can't tuck the sheet in. I added an extra piece of fabric on the inside around the top of the valence and elasticated it to make a fitted sheet with a valence. Works fine but impossible to iron!!

Well this is interesting!!!!!! I have never used valances but have recently bought new beds and wanted valance to cover the sides of the bases!! I have bought them but am waiting until tomorrow when I change the sheets to put them on. Reading all this, though, I might just try one and if I don't like it, will take them back!!!!

I agree - just one more thing to wash! Valances are a very bad idea!

I bought a king size quilt for my double bed but found that Tara was fond of it and started clawing at it, I removed it so only put it on the bed hey days and holidays
If you do not have animals they may be a better option in the long run. I bought a very well priced one at Dunelm Mill.

We have an iron bedstead so no need for a valance UNTIL DH decided that it was good to store the over flow from his study in nice plastic boxes there and then we couldn't work out where to store mum's stuff till we sort it out finally.......

I don't bother with a valance any more, just too much of a faff. My quilt hangs well down over the divan base so its not noticeable and no one else but me and OH goes in the bedroom anyway.. I agree try Dunelm

I also have given up on valances.
I have found that by using a king size quilt on a double bed, it hangs over the bottom and side of the bed.
When I did use them, I had box pleated ones as easier to iron.

I've never used a valance, one more thing to wash and iron and I don't need one now I have a sleigh bed.
Indinana my mattress is very heavy too. I have to get H to put the fitted sheet on as I can't even lift the corners.

Luckylegs9 I know exactly what you mean and I bought a couple recently at Dunelm Mill. They are a fiddle to iron but so easy to fit on your bed. Make sure that you have the correct measurements- the valance on one single bed is a tad short! If Dunelm Mill ones are too short, maybe google them?

My bed has drawers underneath on both sides, hence the need for me.

I do know the kind of valance you mean Luckylegs, but don't think I've seen them for many years. Do you know anyone who could maybe make one for you out of an existing platform valance?
I got rid of my valance years ago for the very same reason as you - my mattress is so heavy I can't even turn it round on my own, never mind lift it off the bed. Thankfully it's the sort that doesn't need to be turned over, just rotated top to bottom every so often.
I did try a valanced sheet once but hated it because obviously it can't be tucked in, so it just slides about and rucks up. That one didn't last any time at all! Now I just do without. Yes, the drawer divan base is visible, but so what? At least I can get to the drawers now without the flipping valance getting in the way!

I think I remember that you could buy bottom sheets with a valance attached at one time.

I threw away my valances when I moved in to this house 14 years ago. I would never be able to change them myself. I haven't seen the elasticated ones for years.

I have never used the valance , it is in the drawer since I got it
