Having just read the post about a new airing cupboard, i am jealous.envy, not that we need an airing cupboard, but a divided under stairs cupboard would be good. My DH is not a DIYer, but a long time ago I marked a line down the wall in the hall where the door could go. He painted over it nuff said. I had seen what the neighbours had done, and thought we could have the same. I am still waiting, patiently hmm

Yeah, but how do I fit it?

When I buy things for Birthday/Christmas presents throughout the year it goes 'under the stairs' along with shoes, bags and other -junk- items! Great, but so hard to reach when I do want something! Plus getting back up from kneeling down is FAR harder these days there's a lot of grunting and groaning when that happens I can tell you!!

How about a pretty curtain Marieeliz?

Tizliz Thu 02-Jun-16 18:03:04

Reminds me of Mrs Brown's Boys ?

Auntieflo Thu 02-Jun-16 17:57:03

We probably will, eventually. smileThe coffers have to recover from a new bathroom, revamped cloakroom and whole house re-paint this year so far. I used to do a lot of DIY, and enjoy it, but age galloped up on me apace, and DH is not a DIY er, and the workman of choice, is in high demand. I still live in hopes though.

Haven't read ft threadauntieflo but why not DIY or get someone in?

lizzypopbottle Thu 02-Jun-16 16:54:03

Here in the frozen north it's a bowelly hole.

I wish I had an under-stairs cupboard. It's a former miner's cottage and under the stairs there's a small cellar which at one time must have been the coal hole as there was an outside wall there - the kitchen is an extension. In that cellar my freezer lives plus anything I want to see the back of. shock

Badenkate, the Collins dictionary definition of glory hole is cupboard filled with untidy miscellaneous items. I think the new definition is one of those annoying cases where an innocuous, innocent and usefully descriptive word has been hijacked by dubious sources to refer to something objectionable. I will have to think of a new name for my messy cupboard. 'gloriously untidy space housing a miscellaneous collection of possessions'?

I no longer have stairs can't say I miss stooping and banging arms head and various other bits whilst repeating I know i put it somewhere!

My understair cupboard is used for stacking the recycling boxes, and where the Dyson lives as well as brooms, wellies and paint tins. A very useful space.

We've lived in this place over over 4 years now and have two cupboards in the hallway. My oh calls one the cupboard under the stairs if I ask where such and such is - we live in a bungalow now !

varian Thu 02-Jun-16 11:06:29

Numberplease I'm sorry to hear that both of you have health problems. It is important to have an accessible loo. Perhaps you should approach your local council and ask for advice about adapting your home if moving to a flat or bungalow is out of the question.

There are grants available and an expert may see possibilities that your plumber didn't think of.Try googling www.disabilityrightsuk.org/housing-grants

Good luck

I would love some ideas for a door to hide my vacuum cleaner etc. under my stairs. Presently there is a 8" wide cupboard which has all the meters in. I keep the vacuum cleaner and a couple of boxes to keep other things at the front of that small cupboard but they are all on show. Has anyone made folding doors or does anyone know of a firm him does folding doors so I could keep things out of sight.

Yes Varian, that small bedroom is where my husband has slept since his operations began back in 2013, and he decided to sleep in there from then on.

varian Wed 01-Jun-16 04:40:06

Numberplease, do you really need that small bedroom or would it not be better to convert it to a bathroom or shower room complete with loo?

ninathenana Wed 01-Jun-16 00:35:48

numberplease not ideal but have you thought of a commode.

Auntieflo in my experience you just have to get three tradesmen in to give quotes and then sit 'Himself' down with a glass of something fortifying so that you can decide which quote to accept. Worked a treat and I got it done but not by DH as expected but by one of the tradesmen. grin
If you need a cupboard you should have a cupboard! wink

Under stairs cupboard.
A' Right angled cupboard', where its nigh on impossible to reach things at the furthest (tightest) point due to having to reach past junk useful stuff.
Banging head on low door frame !

We don`t have a hallway, so our under stairs cupboard is in the living room. It`s a great space, with shelves, but has turned into the biggest junk pile in Christendom! We have another, similar, cupboard, just slightly smaller, in the front bedroom, it goes over the stairs. I`d dearly love to have an extra toilet in there, seeing as our bathroom is downstairs, but the plumber who did our bathroom refit told us it would be horrendously expensive, as there`s no water supply to it. Where we do have a water supply, i.e. water pipes, is the small back bedroom, but that isn`t big enough to take space off for a toilet. It`s starting to be a real bind having to visit the toilet in the night, out of the bedroom, onto the stairlift to go down, then through the living room, kitchen and back lobby to the bathroom, then all the way back again, takes ages, and not much fun on cold nights!

No need for planning, but definitely building regs re fans, drains and electrics!

ninathenana Tue 31-May-16 17:50:22

Wouldn't need planning surely. May well need building regs approval though hmm
I'd lend you my H if you were close. He blocked in the under stairs to make a cupboard not long after we moved in. Also made a shoe/scarf/hat storage unit. He has his uses smile
