Street markets

Thankyou for the input at the moment our markets are a huge mixture but I would be in favour of theming them more than we do. I would also like to see more ethnicity especially street food but the market manager tells me people don't like it and he's frightened of upsetting current stall holders who have been there for years. I hate the clothes too but they do sell especially working clothes, jackets etc and believe it or not pants!!

If anyone has any really good examples of a street market (not a covered market) working well I would love to come and visit.

I agree especially - no cheapo plastic tat.

Well, not actually M0nica's stall, of course....

Another vote for dispensing with the cheap and nasty clothes stalls. I love to see:
- good quality fruit and veg
- Cheeses from around the world
- Fresh fish
- flowers and plants.
- handicrafts - haberdashery, wool, fabric, especially patchwork fabric and pre-cut bundles, and all the little useful tools and gadgets that go with sewing and knitting.
- Good quality / handmade greetings cards

I like the sound of M0nica's upholstery and cushion foam stall - that would be very useful!

We go to a market within a shopping centre but its like a street market, there is a lovely man that sells watches and does repairs also a homemade cakes/bread stall that's extremely popular, wool/sewing fabrics stall sell swatches of matching materials for patchwork projects, pet foods and accessories, flowers/plants, a lady that sells hand painted cards of all types, fruit and veg stall, . Forget the phone accessory stalls, tatty clothes and the stall that sells old lady elastic waist polyester everything YUK!!!

I often look in street markets for items. I might otherwise buy on line. My local market has a stall that sells upholstery and cushion foam. Great stacks of foam, all shapes, sizes and qualities, and the stall holder cuts to size and has a great heap of offcuts, so useful for craft projects.

There's a bit of a difference between farmers markets and street markets, the former usually being good quality food etc and usually a bit pricey, whereas I would expect rock bottom prices at a traditional street market. So I guess you have to know which type of custom you want to attract. I like both types of market, at a street market I like the plants and flowers, cheap fabric on the roll, fruit and veg. I don't like the clothes and bags tat.

What nina said. Fairly traded stuff is good too.

Artisan wares anything from bread to peg bags.
Fresh local veg and flowers. Large packets of washing powder etc. like some people can buy from cash n carry stores. These are the things I buy from my local street market. What annoys me are the endless cheep clothes stalls.
Also the pet stall where you can buy by weight is popular.
