As an American it's not something I hear being brought up in movies and television like in yours. What is the big deal? Is it considered " posh" ? hmm

No, just practical given our wonderful British weather grin

I was thinking the cold must really creep in. Growing up and even now we have what is called storm windows. They are put on the outside of windows with screens that can be used in summer.

They are also effective against noise. In fact some city dwellings and probably those on certain flight paths smile have triple glazing for that reason.
Another advantage is they are usually plastic and low maintenance as they don't rot or rust.

It is also useful for reducing noise from outside.

No as the others have said its needed with our weather/noise issues also why our houses are mostly brick built for the same reason.

I've often wondered why my American friends houses don't seem to be brick built even though they get really cold weather and they always complain how cold their houses are and need to supplement the heating, strange. They also don't often open doors and windows but turn on air-con to cool the house.
