This vanish carpet cleaning stuff I've seen advertised. Does it work? Does it give off fumes?

If you're referring to Vanish Powerpowder, don't waste your time or money. I used it to clean the carpet in my Mum's lounge. The powder is so fine it settles onto every surface, it chokes the vacuum and did little to clean the carpet.

I tried it, but would not buy it again. It choked my vacuum cleaner - powder everywhere and there is a warning on the packet not to breathe the powder in.

I dread to think what it is doing to your lungs!!

I agree, I would not touch it with a barge pole for the reasons already given. I was attempting to clean a rug.

After taking me Level 1 & 2 advanced cleaning course, any product like this just sort of freshens your carpet up, we had lessons on deep carpet cleaning and the only way to clean a carpet is with the appropriate machines, when they say it "lifts the dirt out! with the powder, then obviously it does! lift some of the dirt out (as with any vacuuming) so depends what you call "cleaning" Personally I wouldn't waste your money...I never ever used the "shake n vac stuff" either.

Bikergran I used shake and vac on a carpet and eventually became allergic to the stink of the powder. I spent quite a lot of years with my nose suddenly swelling up and then pouring like a tap. It went away eventually with a gentle steroid nasal spray but it was miserable. I am still not good with other peoples perfumes etc.

I can well imagine that Nellie few months ago my hoover conked and my neighbour kindly offered for me to borrow hers whilst she was away (neither of us have any pets) so I used her hoover a dyson, I had to empty it as it was full of this white powder stuff...anyway after hoovering half of my carpet I stopped..as the smell was too sickly, the powder was "shake n vac" that neighbour uses. it took weeks for the smell to dissapear. But I now have a new carpet and new hoover! so no probs smile
