Try white vinegar. I had some success removing soot from limestone using a green pan scrubber and white vinegar.

I`m just cleaning my Dad`s home ready to sell and there are some black stains on the hearth right next to where the fire was. Presumably where something hot has fallen onto it. I`ve tried general kitchen cleaner spray and also some Cif but they aren`t shifting.
Any ideas?
