Just thought I would say "hello" to everyone on the forum, having just joined. smile

Now, I've just bought a new pair of flat sheets for our bed and after mentioning I like have a top and bottom sheet for our bed I get strange looks!

When I was a child we always had a top and bottom sheet. Is it me?

Thank you.smile

Hello, JaneFW — yes, you can change your username. Just email HQ and explain what you want to do.

JaneFW Mon 24-Apr-17 16:25:01

Very pleased that so many of you still use flat sheets. I've just bought some from Tesco in white, so well happy.

We tuck them in all round top and bottom too!

Would anyone know if it's possible to change my Username for this forum?

I like a top sheet too. Never had a problem with it getting tangled up as I tuck the bottom of it in under the mattress - it stops the duvet sliding off, I find. Nothing worse than waking up because your feet are poking out and cold.

Fitted sheet and duvet, both washed weekly. I can't change the duvet cover as ours is enormous, so OH has to do it, moans but not my remit. I have a couple of gorgeous antique linen sheets that I have dyed, which we use during our very hot summers instead of the duvet.

I agree Yorkshiregel that duvets are not like a quilt and you mould them around you which is not possible if you have a top sheet. Personally I'm not keen on using a top sheet to cut down on washing duvet covers as you inevitably come into contact with the duvet cover whilst sleeping, and I wouldn't want to use top sheets with duvets for visitors as they may think I haven't washed duvet cover!

We have a super king bed and we used to fight over how much quilt we had. I bought two single quilts so we have one each. We can wrap up like a cocoon and both are happy. Easier to change covers as well.

Marieeliz if you google "4 foot bed sheets", lots of stockists come up. Hope you find what you are looking for!

I HATE duvets. DH steals them and I can barely cover my feet if I'm lucky! grin - that is the situation when we sleep "elsewhere".
At home, I have white sheets, top and bottom, two blankets and a crochet bedspread which serves as a blanket. That way both DH and I can cope with our hot flushes [he is on hormones for his prostate cancer]
So, JaneFW you are absolutely not alone.smile

Just bottom sheet for me. I do have a problem though Queen or 4ft bed size. Almost impossible to get bedding for. Anyone know of anywhere please.

Sheilasue Mon 24-Apr-17 13:36:09

Have a bottom sheet and duvet on our bed. Gave up sheets and blankets years ago.

PenJK50 Mon 24-Apr-17 13:32:32

Parklife1 mentions ironing - I have never ironed fitted bottom sheets nor duvet covers! Don't have a top sheet although my mother did.

Auntieflo Mon 24-Apr-17 13:32:27

Newnanny, they sound lovely. Where did you get them please?

sdolly Mon 24-Apr-17 13:31:28

We use top & bottom sheets with blankets and a thin quilt. We don't like duvets as they are invariably too hot for us. It's so easy to keep the right heat by using more or less blankets as the temperature changes. We often take a sheet and the quilt away with us as well as our own top pillows :-)

newnanny Mon 24-Apr-17 13:18:35

I used to use fitted bottom sheets until on holiday we were given a huge cotton thinly padded sheet to cover our bed completely and sleep on about 1 cm thick. Now we use these instead of a bottom sheet. They are actually more comfortable. We do not have a top sheet just a duvet however in summer when it is hot we use another cotton padded bottom sheet as a cover. I just have 6 of these padded cotton very thin sheets.

Have just been staying at my mum's for a few days and know why I no longer use a top sheet with duvet at home, as it's ended up in a tangle at the bottom of the bed every night here!

hulahoop Mon 24-Apr-17 12:22:02

Top and bottom for me usually only have sheet over me some of the night . Silly question but if pillow cases match quilt cover don't they fade quicker than cover because they have to be washed same time as sheets if you leave cover longer hope this makes sense

DanniRae Mon 24-Apr-17 12:21:36

I change my duvets from winter to summer - 10.5 tog in winter and 4.5 tog in summer.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 24-Apr-17 12:18:52

I'm old fashioned, I use a top and bottom sheet with a few patchwork quilts instead of a duvet. If I get too hot I throw a few off.

aggie Mon 24-Apr-17 12:04:40

I can't get the duvet cover on ! No problem taking it off and washing and ironing , but I end up hot and bothered and the cover needing ironed again , so I use a top sheet

Dharmacat Mon 24-Apr-17 11:59:53

Top and bottom Egyptian cotton sheets washed and ironed each week and duvet cover changed every month. As king size duvet covers are also 100% cotton i could not face ironing these every week. Have two duvets, winter and summer weight and the top sheet gives a third option when it is really hot which happens in our part of France.

amt101 Mon 24-Apr-17 11:29:35

As I grew up my mother used to do top sheet to the bottom and a clean top sheet every week.
I did this until duvets became popular as well as fitted bottom sheets. I now have a fitted bottom sheet and flat top sheet as I see no reason to keep changing the duvet cover. Have never managed to easily change the duvet easily.

Yorkshiregel Mon 24-Apr-17 11:29:10

A duvet is not an eiderdown or a quilt. It is supposed to mould itself to you not sit on top of a sheet. We have a fitted sheet on the bottom and duvet on the top. Lovely and warm. Both are washed regularly along with the pillow cases.

Kiwichick Mon 24-Apr-17 11:14:05

Top and bottom sheet, with top sheet only tucked in at the bottom. This way if OH pinches the duvet you still have something covering you haha

ClaraB Mon 24-Apr-17 10:54:14

Same here Watermeadow - top and bottom sheet and I only ever change the bottom sheet, both are flat sheets. Duvet cover doesn't need washing so often and DH changes our bed as it's a 6 foot - he's very good at the hospital corners, well that's my excuse!
