Cleaning the iron

I was unwell last week and my husband 'helped' by doing a pile of ironing, for which I was very grateful. This morning when I got the iron out, the sole plate was covered in a thick brown gunge. I tried to get it off with a plastic scraper and various chemicals (being careful of the non-stick?? coating!) all to no avail. Checked on Google.....would you expect to clean an iron with Paracetamol? Me neither! However, with the iron on a high heat, rub a paracetamol tablet (Carefully due to proximity of hot iron!) over the sole plate and the gunge just comes off! I couldn't believe it......so easy! I just need to tell everyone! Wonder if it will work on my oven? :-)

Wow! What a great tip, never heard of it! Thanks for passing it on.

However it does make you wonder what a paracetamol tablet does to your insides.

Does anyone know how to clean the soleplate (supposedly nonstick, but stuff has stuck to it) of a steam iron. I have tried a Sticky Stuff Remover; a paste of white vinegar and bicarb; nail varnish remover; a white nylon pan scrubber; my thumb nail... It is a bit better, but by no means clean. Help and advice, please
