How long does your kettle, when full, take to boil?

Baggs Tue 21-Nov-17 19:42:28

My iron is over twenty years old too. Bought it in Thailand. It's also made by Phillips.

Mine is the same as kittys, Russell Hobbs 1.7 litre. I think it was £19.99 from Sainsbury about 2 years ago.
It boiled in 3:09.69 so not bad.

The time it takes a kettle takes to boil (assuming the volume of water and starting temperature is the same) depends on the actual output power of the kettle. You need to ask about it.

Some kettles have lower power output to start with and take longer to boil from water straight out of the tap. The higher power rated take less time.

However it does not cost any more to boil, say one litre of water in a more powerful kettle than a less powerful one. It just takes less time.
It depends how desperate you get for a brew .

Mines a hob kettle.

Need a new iron though. Haven’t a clue which one to buy.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 19:09:18

I had to empty mine carefully soop in case Jalimus came in and tried to make tea - the boiling water would have spouted everywhere.

I also seem to have to replace Kettles every 18 months or so. We have very hard water so try to use filter jug, however DH just ignores and fills from the tap - unless I am hovering around.
Current one is black cheap buy from Sainsburys so regret choosing that colour. It takes about 4 mins to boil if completely full.
I think I need to get the lime scale cleaner out. blush

MacSporran wants to know why the kettle (that is never filled to the grim) is now full of boiling water. When I told him that it's all your fault, Baggs...he said, that's okay! wink

kittylester Tue 21-Nov-17 17:34:58

We bought a new toaster, to go with the new kettle. DH doesn't swear at this one like he did at the old one, if that helps!

soop Tue 21-Nov-17 17:22:16

My kettle is an iGENIX 1.7L took just over two mins to boil.

I do the thumb nail and cloth Petra but without the lines ale cleaner stuff - it tends to be a soft scale and I only use filtered water so the worst part is around the lid. The inside I just brush out with the washing up brush and it comes off.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 17:06:36

Charleygirl thanks for the information. I bought this one to match the toaster which we had had for a while and DH dislikes it so we may look for a new one.
Incidentally - has anyone found a toaster which toasts evenly on both sides? I was told in an electrical shop that no matter what make of toaster, they all use the same type of elements.

Fennel Tue 21-Nov-17 17:00:14

ps Kettle cost €28 - about £22.
I've just looked up Bluesky and it's based in Dublin!
I had one of their sewing machines, it didn't last long.

Fennel Tue 21-Nov-17 16:55:09

Mine's a very cheap Bluesky make (?chinese?)
1.7 litres, 4 mins 50.
I think I've had it about a year, and can't remember what the last one was.

Luckygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 16:39:46

Alima - I'm like you - two kettles in 2 years. Built-in obsolescence I guess.

DanniRae Tue 21-Nov-17 16:36:18

I get lime scale on my black kettle too. Is the lime scale remover the type in a spray bottle petra? Because I thought a black kettle and toaster would be easier to keep clean - didn't think about limescale. Back to chrome for next purchase, I think!

Charleygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 16:33:08

Jalima I recently bought a Dualit and I can fill it very full and it does not spill a drop unlike my previous kettle which to me was dangerous because even when I only boiled enough for a couple of cups it still spouted water everywhere. This one is quiet and fast boiling.

petra Tue 21-Nov-17 16:31:45

welshwife
I'm a bit anal with things like limescale on kettles.
What I do is get the Lime scale remover on a cloth and with my thumbnail go round all the joints where there is limescale.

NanaandGrampy Tue 21-Nov-17 16:29:45

I'd have to ask Grampy - but I do know we only put in and boil what we're going to use so it never takes long.

Welshwife Tue 21-Nov-17 16:19:07

That was a good price! How do you find using that shape as opposed to the jug type - which I have.

shysal Tue 21-Nov-17 16:14:03

I have a newish Asda chrome kettle. 1.7 litres just took 2min 50secs.

Alima Tue 21-Nov-17 16:02:25

Honestly, we seem to get through kettles, and irons, like a dose of salts and have to buy new every 1-2 years. Are we unlucky or are the new ones not very long lasting? Your aged kettle sounds far more efficient, and economical, than the many we have dumped in that time.

Baggs Tue 21-Nov-17 15:59:22

I've just remembered that I took the filter out yonks ago. Was wondering what the Filterline thing was all about, then I remembered ?. In Oxfordshire, where the water was hard, we used a filter jug for all drinking water, including what went in the kettle. Here in Argyll it's soft water and there's never any furring on anything.

Galen Tue 21-Nov-17 15:52:12

Never use mine as I’m scared of carrying hot liquids with my wobbliness!

Welshwife Tue 21-Nov-17 15:50:26

No think the info you gave initially would suggest it as good as you get now and many new ones are very expensive -£50+.
