Kettle survey (not really a survey)

18 months ago my children gave me an Instant Kettle. This is wonderful. Nothing to pick up, I just fill it up using a jug from the tap. It remains on all of the time and produces the water for tea, coffee, etc at the touch of a button.
I still have two kettles (for emergencies), but think these instant kettles are really great and much safer if anyone has any sort of problems with hands or wrists, etc.

At allotment I have a Kelly's kettle which has the water around the little bonfire. It's great fun and trying to get the water to boil is an entertainment in itself. With a wind up radio, you can have a very pleasant break from the weeding.

I remember reading that the faster the kettle boils the more scale it produces.

Alina, you sound as if we have the same problem. I don’t know if it is the hard water in our area or just bad luck. The last time I bought a kettle which was a few months ago I bought one of those wire balls that catch the scale. It seems to help.

I have a boiling water tap - instant hot water! Kettles are sooo last century! ???

PS. Kettle holds 1.7 litres of water, boiled from stone cold.

My kettle is a Russell Hobbs 2500-3000 watts. Filled to the maximum line, it boiled in 3mins 58 seconds.
On a normal day I never fill it right up, only use what I need. Took advice from my Dad years ago, as he said it was wasting energy to boil a full kettle.

Which is about as far as my physics knowledge goes.

The higher the number of Watts quoted on the base of your kettle the quicker it will boil any set volume of water. Look at the watts on the base of your kettle, (but do empty it first. )
I always go for a 3KW rating (3000 watts.) They are more expensive but much quicker .

I really like hob kettles, but I've got a fold down lid on my cooker. It means the lid would have to be up, and it would need to be kept gleaming.

Chewbacca my son in America has a hob kettle as electric ones aren't really a thing there. My 21yo daughter was astounded to see it when she went to visit as she'd never heard of or seen a hob kettle. Her eyebrows nearly flew off when it boiled and began whistling!

Mine's a Dualit, 3W, took 3.5 mins. I have to say I don't boil kettle for a cuppa.We have had a Breville One Cup for years,boils exact amount, is adjustable and no lifting heavy kettles with dodgy hands.Also useful when small amounts of water needed as small jug fits under 'spout'.

Does anyone else use a kettle on the hob to boil their water? I've never had an electric kettle; always had a whistling kettle but I don't know of many others who still use them not that I've made it a general question in the course of conversation until now!

About 3.5mins here. I was boiling it to put into the slow cooker to steam my Xmas puds so it wasn't wasted!

My kettle is a new this year Dualit. It's apparently 3W.

I bought it to replace a cheap temporary kettle which I'd had for years and years and years. That one is still going strong in the utility room where Dh uses it for purposes I prefer not to enquire about.

If you can be bothered to think about it my kettle's wattage as Pitt's!!!

Wattage of one's kettle is needed to make a proper comparison. I should have mentioned that at the beginning.

Bog standard Tesco dome kettle, cost less than £15 18 months ago, boiled 1.7L in 2:58.42. I always thought it was a rubbish kettle but it appears I was deluded...again.

It sounds similar, Dannirae, Is it 8 oz dried fruit, 4 oz sugar, 4 oz marge, 1/4 pint water, brought to boil and simmer 20 mins, cool a bit then add a beaten egg and 8 oz SR flour. Bake 150 C for 1 to 1 and 1/4 hour?
