Good floor standing reading light - advice please

I am looking for a floor standing light that's good for reading as a possible present for my husband. He's been looking at one on the Serious Readers website. The company advertises a lot and the lights are very expensive. Have you had a light from SR? Is it worth the high cost? Or, have you found a good alternative? I did get John Lewis brand LED lights that we use as bedside lights and these are very good for reading, bright and easy to adjust; however, the floor light in the same style only comes in black and I would prefer grey (or silver or white). Any advice welcome!

I bought my OH and excellent reading lamp from Ikea last Christmas. Easy to manoeuvre to wherever you want it to be and gives a good light. Not expensive either. Have a look at some of these:

We have 2 'mother and child' lights which we find good.

We brought this for my mum. Not very sturdy but it does the job www.argos.co.uk/product/4717533

I've got one a bit like this - it works well.

Have a look at RNIB floor lights- they are mainly silver colour or white.

We got a senior readers light after sending for catalogue. It looked expensive, so we didn't order one. Some while later they offered rather a good discount so we opted for the table light. DH always used it for reading, and I find it brilliant when unpicking mistakes in sewing! It went wrong after about two years and they mended it and said that their guarantee is three years!

We have 2 floor standing SR lights and a SR table lamp. We find them good. Had halogen lamps before but they were too hot. Our floor lights have multi angle head and are dimmable. We are pleased with our purchase but as you say not cheap. Depends what your individual needs are I think. I use mine for sewing as can't see too well.

I have a standard up lighting lamp and it is has a good gentle light. It matches the other lamp shades in our house. I must have had it for a good few years now though.

We have the Ikea Antifoni, it’s ideal and very adjustable.
It’s on the link from trisher

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions and also feedback on the expensive Serious Readers lights. Thanks Chewbacca for the IKEA link - I've found one there I really like the look of so will order it now, but will still consider SR later on - several reading spots in the house that need good light for ageing eyes!

Yes, this one is a great option.

A friend and his wife have SR lights. He is endlessly picky and actually went to their showrooms to try them all out. He and his wife both came out with entirely different lights but ones most suited to their needs. They both took books/knitting etc with them so that they were able to make sure the light was entirely suitable.

We have a “mother and child” floor lamp quite similar to the one on trisher’s link. Must have had it for over 16 years, have only had to replace one bulb in that time. It is used a lot, we will certainly replace with something similar if this one goes kaput.

Forgot to say, we bought ours at Homebase. Just googled and they are still on sale from about £35 upwards.

I have a daylight lamp for reading and computer work. I would not use anything else now, it's amazing. . It came from Clifford James and is flicker free. But they only do brass or chrome.
