Registering a product

This is getting more and more intrusive and complex. I have recently bought a Panasonic microwave and decided to register it online.
There were several abortive attempts as the site asked me to disable some aspect in my browser. I googled instructions and did so.
I didn't want to sign up for a free camera or prize draw. Neither did I want to create a profile. Neither should it concern Panasonic how old I am. I just simply wanted to register the appliance.
It, of course, wanted the serial number. The microwave was now installed in its built in space. In our 80s there was no way to look at the rear. Fortunately, I still had its packaging and found it. It would help if a serial numbers sticker was stuck on the front of the appliance.
The whole exercise took over an hour and ended with me re-enabling the browser

It must be Panasonic then as I have registered a new hotpoint tumbler online today and had none of that palaver or I would have abandoned it and used snail mail.

There was no snail mail option such as a card to complete and send.

I had the same problem registering my Panasonic bread maker. It took ages.

The worst was Hotpoint, when I tried to buy a spare for my year old fridge. I tried unsuccessfully to buy on their website and eventually called customer services to be told that model didn't exist. I persisted until the advisor eventually found it on their system. What a waste of my time.

I never fill these out. I don't think it will make any difference as far as the warranty is concerned, and it will just allow the company to inundate you with unwanted email and post.

Yes had the same problem with my Panasonic microwave. As the new kitchen has just passed the first year all the appliance warranties have run out and I've have now had to cover them all with insurances - probably a waste of money but sod's law the other small built in microwave (which is pretty useless hence the Panasonic) developed a fault and then my old washer did too so it was cheaper to take out the insurances.

Willow, but how much have you saved over a lifetime by not taking out warranties. Far more than the cost of occasionally replacing appliances that die after guarantee expires but before a warranty would have had you taken one out.

I reckon over the years the total cost of warranties I didn't take out must run into £k or more. Enough to replace most of my white good or even the cooker.

Can I ask why you wanted to register this product?
Most electrical items will break down in the first year so your covered by your guarantee.
Most showroom staff are on a bonus for selling a warranty.

I've never understood the purpose of registering appliances, so I've never bothered doing it. The guarantee - one year or two, or sometimes (in the case of a Samsung washing machine, for instance) the guarantee is 5 years. All you need to do is retain proof of purchase to make a claim under the guarantee. I have done this on more than one occasion and I have never, ever been asked if my appliance has been registered. It is, as wildswan said, simply a device to get all your details onto their mailing database and flood your inbox/doormat with offers and newsletters for evermore.
