Mice or rats in loft

We have mice (hopefully not rats) in our loft space. Our Council no longer deals with pest control but gives you the number for a contractor who you have to contact. I have made an appointment. I am concerned though, that if they use poison, which I understand from the lady I spoke to, they do, we will have an almost worse problem with the smell (and flies) which will result from decomposing animals that cannot be seen and removed.

Does anyone have experience of this, and is the use of traps as an alternative to poison successful.?

Yet another old thread resurrected! This time it looks like its by an advertiser.

Gma29 when I moved into my bungalow last year which had been empty over a year. The people selling cleaned it but left the mice in the loft and evidence of them in the kitchen . My pest controller used poison as I wanted the pests dead. None in the kitchen but killed the ones in loft. Couldn't find bodies no smell but did have problem with flies. The loft hatch was in the shower room. I got 2 large rodent/ insect electronic repellers from Screwfix. One plugged in the hall the other in the bedroom. It made the fly's easy to hit. But I used fly papers and got my son to tape up the edges of the loft. They either found another way out or died out. This year a squirrel got in the loft. Pest control put out traps but I also had my roofers block any route into loft. They put a hard plastic board which is hinged under the tile lip and it sits in the gutter nothing can get in its completely sealed. The squirrel couldn't get back in. Had my home improvements guys remove all the insulation as it had mouse and squirrel droppings . Found 2 long dead mice . Had all new insulation put down. Due to home improvements had loft hatch moved into bedroom. It's well sealed as I am never putting anything up there. Hope that helps.

We once had mice in the loft from the field behind our house. They took the peanuts we had in the garage for feeding the birds and it seemed like they were playing football above our bed. I couldn’t sleep, imagining the mouse running over my face. (I am not normally scared of them.) . We had the pest man in. We never noticed any smell afterwards. I felt bad because I had decided to become vegetarian a few days before, and it seemed a bit hypocritical, but I couldn’t put up with it. We have had a cat since then and no problems!

When we lived in the country we had the odd ‘visiter’ luckily not in the loft. We knew straight away as the cat would sit staring and waiting for it to emerge. Said cat also dealt with the problem.

When we were living in the country we had a lot of experience with mice, and the damage they can do. In the house, in the car, in the piano etc.
So we resorted to poison in the end. Yes, the decomposing bodies smell bad , like gas.
But when you take into account the rate at which they can breed, for us there was no choice.

It could also be a member of the weasel family. The exterminator may be able to tell you what it is if there are droppings around, which there will be if it is mice.

Dead rats stink, and as they, like mice, do not all die in the open, but under floorboards or behind skirting-boards poison would not be my method of choice.

Would you object to borrowing a fox terrier or a cat?

dragonfly46 Sat 29-Dec-18 08:13:16

Could be squirrels!

craftergran Sat 29-Dec-18 07:51:41

Just remembered we did hear them in the walls.

When we lived in the country we had mice each winter. We caught one running around livingroom. Had it in a jar and of course we couldn't kill it, we put it out in the field that bordered our garden, knowing it would be back by evening (though hoping it wouldn't).

They seem to like the plastic that covers wiring. We used poison because we wanted our lights to work, but yes you get a "mousey" smell.

I can't say we really heard the mice, just saw "evidence" and the one running around our livingroom. So maybe it is birds you have.

It might be worth investigating what is up there.

My DM had starlings in her bungalow roof every winter. They went on their own in the spring. After a couple of winters she had a builder go round and net under the eaves to stop them getting in.

At our last house we had a winter bat roost in our chalet bungalow on the other side of the wall from my DS’s bed. (They moved under the hanging tiles in summer) They jiffled a lot if the weather was warmer.

Where we live now we have house sparrows.

Do be aware it may not be nice or rats but birds that get inthrough the eves my kids grew up with little pattering around over their beds but it was actually swifts

Immediately, I called up the local Nassau County exterminator who had done the best prevention methods to eliminate all rodents.
After the rat infestation I was also dealing with the same situation of rodent smell then I had opened up the windows and used electric fans, I had also used deodorizing air fresheners and disinfectants which helped to eliminate the rodent smell.

EdithFlores Sat 29-Dec-18 05:17:18

Last month, I saw a rodent in my house, the body is about 3 to 4 inches in length, who was trying destroy my house, by cutting all electric wires and spreading disease.

I’m going to try that Greta8 - Some say they work, some not, but it’s definitely worth a go. I’ve also ordered some peppermint oil!

We live in an old cottage and have had this problem over the years. Used poison in the loft to get rid of them previously. However last year in the autumn when they start coming in we've used those plug in electronic devices Pestbye. They're incredibly effective and we haven't had a problem since. The key thing is that you need to get them as close to the mice as possible, there are now battery ones that you can put in the loft, so no plug is needed. We scatter about four over the bedrooms and roof. So much better than poison - it just seems to deter them and they go.

seasider we do have pigeons in the garden, but I really don’t know what it is. It would be a relief if it was birds!

seasider Fri 22-Jun-18 07:13:19

Are you sure its not pigeons? I had a pair in the loft who got in because a brick under the eaves had dropped out. They flew away when the builder went up so he just had to clean up and block the hole thankfully.

Synonymous Thu 21-Jun-18 16:05:54

They are all disgusting creatures with their weak bladders and revolting habits! If you are unable to access the loft it is always best to get in the experts. Hope they sort it out for you very quickly. Gma29

There was a dreadful smell emanating from a loft in a previous house and, although we knew it was a dead mouse and searched repeatedly, we just could not find it until the day we moved out. Fortunately the smell dissipated after about a fortnight. We had a similar thing in the kitchen but thankfully found it fairly quickly under the kitchen units. We always keep mouse traps baited and in place and regularly check them all but it is the ones which die from natural causes or poisons which prove tricky to find.
We are currently battling rats which seem only to be outside and are taking the bait which we have secreted in a length of drainpipe on the patio. Bait well and truly nibbled and no signs or smells of rats so far. 'They' seem to think none of us are more than 20' from a rat! hmm

We checked our traps at least 3 times a week and emptied them and reset them, after catching 12 and then nothing for weeks, I went up in the loft and the smell was awful, one trap had caught a mouse which was putrifying, so, I wouldn't leave them up there to mummify, you'd never get rid of the smell. I also now have a plug in that sends an electrical pulse around the wiring in the house that mice don't like. It doesn't work on spiders though.
