Mouse in the house!

Cowering. Of course.

So proud of my DD. Cat brought in another vole yesterday and it ran under desk. Feather duster didn’t work at getting it out as it was covering in a hidden corner but DD put on some gloves and carefully caught said vole and released it into field.

It seems that all my methods are safe....18 days in and still no mouse, despite all my best efforts, which include mars bars, soft cheese, peanut butter and Harrigan's bucket!! I have now bought 6 large plastic containers and all our food is now protected. Getting bored of it now!

Are we not reading any of my posts that the safe non-toxic way to deter mice and small mammals is to put cayenne pepper behind cupboards and along their routes?

Oh, I love the sound of the It’s A Knockout mouse catcher! It’d nearly be worth having a mouse just to be able to try it out.

We had to get the rodent control man every year , got so we were on first name terms , now I am here in the new place , fingers crossed I am hoping to be mouse free , I am terrified of them , look up the rodent control firms and ring them

Lynker could it be that you have more than one mouse, but they all look the same?
I agree poison sounds horrible, but mice can spread disease and can be very destructive. Plus they breed prolifically.
And the smell - yuk! (no appropriate smiley.)

We have now bought 4 packs of poison (sorry), another trap and I have set up Harrigan's bucket........my nerves are in shreds....I jump at every sound! We have found mouse droppings in a hall cupboard and the top of my washer is covered in footprints......

We've come back from holiday with no sign of the resident slugs but there are signs of mice. Not seen and as yet uncaught. Been in a cupboard and everything not in a tin had been bitten e.g. tetrapaks.

Old house so we get them from time to time but usually see and catch them.

Determined little blighter Lynker you never have just one mouse there are always more.
We have a plug in rodent deterrent which seems to help.
I agree about keeping surfaces clean as mice urinate all over, slugs or mice which is worse ?

Oh dear lord.......still no mouse caught in the 5 traps in the cupboard, but it's eaten some fruit out of the fruit dish in the dining room.......

I live in a rural area and often get wood mice in the house. I have a humane trap with peanut butter and hay for them to sleep in and I put them out in the garden in the morning. I have two cats and they don't deter the little woodies.

I caught a couple in my flat with that method, harrigran.

Try to find out how the mouse is getting in and block up the hole.

DS had a mouse just before they were due to go on holiday, he was determined to catch it before they left. He followed instructions from an online video. You fill a bucket with water, pass a string through an empty drink can and tie it across the bucket top, smear bait on the can and place a stick against the side of the bucket to allow the mouse to climb.

Mouse climbs to top and on to tin can which swivels on string and plops the mouse into the water, a bit like ' it's a knockout '
DS caught it within an hour of setting the trap.

There’s a lot of them about! I’m currently looking after dd2’s dog while they’re on holiday. Since they’ve recently had a mouse problem we’re also popping across to check the traps etc. The dog has proved to be completely disinterested in the mice, despite them being in the room where she sleeps. But she did catch, I’m really not sure how, a pigeon in our back garden this morning....so if anyone has a pigeon problem I could send her over!

For blocking mouse holes we use wire wool , its easy to stuff in the holes and works a treat, apparently they can't chew though it.

I found that a bit of mars bar in a mouse trap did the trick. The mice could not resist it. Good luck

A cat works well but if you don't have one small mammals (mice squirrels etc) can be deterred by putting cayenne pepper behind cupboards and in entry points. This goes off eventually so you have to top it up. This is pretty humane I think.

Soap, really strong smelling, preferably carbolic. They absolutely love it!

Get a grass snake. Very large one sorting out the baby days in our compost heap.

If nothing else, I feel less alone having read your comments! Who knew they were so common? We have today bought 2 more ready baited humane traps and loaded them with chocolate, peanut butter, onion and potato (which is what they originally chewed). So I now have 5 traps in the cupboard.............I'm ready!!!

Yes, shrews are bitter. My gran said so.
She also showed me how to get a mouse out of the house: get it cornered, pref in the kitchen, and drop a yellow duster on top of it. Then lift up duster, grabbing the bulge in the middle, release bulge into the garden. (Cat should be shut in the bathroom when this takes place.)
