Cleaning dirty Sofa

I did mine last week, hired a Rug Doctor from the local Morissons cost about £30 for the day with the upholstery kit. Didn't take long so I did the carpets as well, fairly heavy so you may need assistance, would be easy for an able bodied man.

I think you should get it done professionally if your sofa is new and was expensive.

Doing things yourself could invalidate any guarantee.

My dog has done exactly the same thing Framilode, I used some foam upholstery cleaner. It worked.

Depends what the fabric is - cleaning it can remove the fire safety element. If it's just round the base though I'd use a mild solution of washing powder and a damp cloth - again try an inconspicuous area first.

I was told my sofa upholstery could only be spot-cleaned, not dry-cleaned or washed (even though cushion covers are removeable?!) , because it would lose it's fire-resistance. In the end the covers got so grubby that I removed them and washed on a low heat using wool washing liquid. May no longer be fire-resistant but looks much better!

Steam cleaners are great but the steam may shrink the fabric, so test it on a bit at the back first. I’d use a bigger cleaner with more power than ta little hand held- they have atttachments for upholstery and you need a rough cloth like an old white towel to wipe the dirt that lifts off and dry the fabric. I steamed a large 1970s dralon chair and it did clean up well.

You may be lucky with a steam cleaner but personally with it being an expensive piece of furniture I would find a professional to do it.
Once it has been done I would make sure your dog is showered or bathed every week to stop a repeat performance.

You will have to do a patch test. I cleaned mine with steam wrongly starting on the arm and the colour ran as it is multi coloured stripe it notices. Upholstery cleaner with a sponge worked ok on the rest of mine but not as good as a professional.
