The cost. Well a lot depends on where you live. Your talking about a new roof, what tiles do you want, it makes a difference to the cost.
Do you want a bathroom in the conversion ( I would think so)
All I will say is: be very clear as to what you want as any change of mind on your part could be costly.
Have people in your road had a conversion? Were they happy with it? ask them. There are a lot of cowboys out there, be careful.
Also, don't look on Check A Trade. Every trader on that website has to pay to advertise his work, no good tradesman has to advertise.
My ex son in law specialises in loft conversions and is renowned for his work. You will never see his name advertised.

Several houses in the road have had a loft conversion. Mind you, only one side of any one semi. Our attached neighbour has one. They moved into it. Sure they would be amenable to us having a nose at theirs. Don't see them that often but do exchange Christmas cards.
Further down the road have just had one but do not know them at all. Suppose I could pop a SAE asking the pertinent questions.

nana2006 You may already be aware of this, but just in case you're not - there are certain regulations regarding loft usage because of weight-bearing timbers etc. I'm not sure of the details, but it depends on whether you want to use it for occasional use or everyday use. In other words, the amount of furniture etc that would need to be supported.

I'm sure someone better informed than I am will be along to give you advice.

I would say get quotes for both, investigate whether or not you need planning permission, seriously think through whether and how you could cope with the upheaval and if possible have a look at loft conversions in houses similar to yours.
Sounds like the ideal opportunity given that a large outlay would be involved either way.
