.......have a habit of using Sainsbury's cheapest washing up liquid - and find that the bowl and sink are now scummy when the bowl is emptied?
This seems to have started several months ago.
It doesn't froth like it used to. What has changed?

No I use 59p from the pound shop and it’s fine ?

grannyqueenie Sun 23-Sept-18 14:24:53

I use Sainsbury’s sensitive one for the sake of my hands but despite using the dishwasher too I seem to get through loads of it... mainly ‘cos I’m trying in vain to get it to froth up.

I always buy Fairy but it lasts me a long time as I the dishwasher a lot. Dishwasher tablets vary a lot. I buy the expensive ones but try to stock up when they are on offer.

Has there been a change in your water supply, Alie? I know it's quite hard in your part of the world already. Here, because of possible water shortage this summer, they have combined our nice soft water supply with water from a nearby borehole which has made it harder than usual.

We have noticed a big change in all types of washing up liquid both cheaper ones and the premium brands .
The water goes all horrible and you have to use a lot more than you used to do . I think they must be using horrible palm oil and cheaper " ingredients "
It's all about the money in everything.

I’m finding the same and the water here is pretty much neutral. Aldi’s premium brand and Morrison’s seem the best.

But you don’t need the bubbles.....

lemongrove Sun 23-Sept-18 17:18:25

Ali am finding the same with Fairy Liquid, and you need to use much more!
Definitely must be a change in what’s in these things.

Adding some soda crystals to your washing up as well as Fairy (or whatever) will increase its effectiveness. On some pans I only use soda crystals. I also use them in the washing-machine instead of detergent. They clean clothes and keep the machine clean.

I use Aldi's own. It's great.

AlieOxon Mon 24-Sept-18 19:31:13

I think I will try the Aldi liquid, since we have one here now.

anno, I've looked at Thames Water online but if they have changed their water at all, they are not letting on!

Obviously there is something going on with the washing up liquid though!

lemongrove Mon 24-Sept-18 22:00:27

Yes, I was wondering about the water.

MiniMoon Mon 24-Sept-18 23:34:18

I use Fairy liquid here in Northumberland and it's fine. No change in the foam quality at all, and a little goes a long way.

AlieOxon Tue 25-Sept-18 10:09:27

Mini I bet your water is soft though

AlieOxon Sat 29-Sept-18 16:57:13

Is there anyone talking on Mumsnet about this?
Or anywhere else?
I'm finding the scum very annoying. My sink hasn't needed much cleaning, now it does.

AlieOxon Wed 10-Oct-18 20:06:11

I got some of the liquid from Aldi - and I have froth. And a clean sink.

I think the scum is actually greasy....what's the point of that, when you're supposed to be =removing- grease?

AlieOxon Wed 10-Oct-18 20:06:50

That was meant to be italics.
