If anyone is considering having solar panels fitted, please make sure that you have them 'bird-proofed'at the same time. We had the panels fitted about 14 months ago and have been very pleased with them as we have saved a lot on our electricity bills. However, for the past few months, pigeons have been getting under the panels causing unbearable noise and disruption. Our bedroom is under the panels and it sounds as if the birds have hobnailed boots on! We are also concerned about them causing damage to the panels. We now have to pay several hundred pounds for a roofing company to come and clear out the mess, sanitise the area and put metal bird proofing around all the panels. Don't know why the company who fitted them in the first place didn't warn us that this might happen. Several other houses in the area have had the same problems and have also had to have the bird proofing fitted. Just a word of warning to others.

Surely you didn't need an expert to come round and tell you to bird-proof the panels ?

We had no reason to expect to be plagued by pigeons getting under the panels. We have friends who have had solar panels for many years without having this problem.
