We call them "just jobs" in our house. Usually relating to something DH wants to do in the workshop or garden.

Oh, I'll just go and do X only to discover X can't be done without A,B, and C

Agree! But don't always have the patience to follow the logical sequence and tend to skip around. Currently have 3 jobs half-done (not counting 2 knitting projects).
I put it down to my long-standing talent for procrastinating and displacement!
