Tell yourself it's a project, you'll muddle through. Just think about it being your own stamp and nobody else's.

You see I'm a grand designs fan
We bought this house "with potential" but that was 40yrs ago and there's still work to be done.
In fact more because things that we did then need replacing now. Sigh!
We did our costings roughly before we bought it and paid less than the asking price.
My DD and DSiL have just renovated an old farmhouse with weans in tow.
I have nowt but admiration. The roof and the drains were their first priority. Then water, heating and decorating very much last. Actually the garden is last.

We’ve gutted 3 houses. The last one when DH retired, we took everything out back to the bare walls. Fortunately that time we could use tradesmen to put everything back.
There comes a moment when it’s neither a wreck or habitable, and you think ‘what have we done, will it ever be finished!’ But it does eventually come together.

I always say no more renovations, no more huge extensions, too stressful, always over budget, so many problems crop up along the way, but every time I hear about someone taking on a project, I feel a bit envious.

Hazel, you may have a few bumps along the way, but it will be an adventure, good luck, and keep smiling!

Sorry but it's no chateau ! A dormer bungalow in fact ! That said, a very large footprint with wrap around garden, detached double garage and at the end of a small cul de sac.
You see, not remotely romantic !
On the upside it is situated within a village on the N. Cornish coast which still has a community rather than simply holiday homes. Oh, almost forgot, there is a butler sink, no kitchen but hey, you can't have everything . Upstairs kitchen has pipes good to go then-happy days !
Will keep you updated. Bumps not anticipated - earthquakes very probable.

Well, we moved into a house that only needed the kitchen enlarged and a new bathroom.

Two and a half years later, we have enlarged but not re-decorated the kitchen and I am admittedly tired of plasterboard walls and a hardboard work top.

It all takes time especially at our time of life and with a few minor health issues we hadn't bargined for.

Do you intend to do the work yourself hazel?

If so, do over-estimate the costs as always it seems, (in our experience) the need to buy bits and pieces which really add up once the major building work is done.

I'd be suggesting a team of builders do the work to be honest (and with deadlines for completion) but if you are good at DIY I wish you well and hope it all comes together without too many delays or disasters and you love it when it's done. See it as being an exciting project rather than a daunting task.
