If you have a drawer divan bed, do you cover the drawers with a platform valance or not?

I cover my drawer divan with a fitted valance, not a gathered one. The drawers have brass handles!

Or maybe the heavy mattress slows it down.

annep1 Tue 01-Oct-19 23:18:46

Oh goodness Suedonim how funny! Ours isn't as strong as that.

SueDonim Tue 01-Oct-19 14:36:40

Annep1 I was pondering on getting a new bed and looked at one of those lift-up base divans in M&S. I didn't realise it was spring-loaded and it nearly catapulted me over the bed and into the saucepans, china and cutlery of the next department! grin

Only bed in this house that has a valance on it is the one where I got rid of the children's underbed that was no longer required, gave it a new mattress, and now store all my Christmas wrapping paper underneath. It is now a pretty-ish storage space and the kids/grandkids use it as a day bed, lazy irks

I don't have divans hence no need for frocks.
I like to be able to Hoover under the beds.

I have a platform valance to match my bedding because the cat has scratched all the fabric off the drawers. No frills though, a box pleat at each corner.

Dust gatherers well, the dust has to gather somewhere!
At least they can be laundered unlike divan bases.

Fashion or not, I really don't like to see bare divan bases.

Each to their own.

GabriellaG54 Tue 01-Oct-19 02:17:31

Dust gatherers.

Why did that appear twice?

Good answer.

Yes, all ours are drawer divans and all have valances, mostly straight with pleats, some years old.

I don't care if they're old-fashioned and if anyone questions anything I have which is out of date ie fashion, household goods, kitchen, phone etc I can reassure myself I can reassure myself that I'm not wasting the planet's resources.

Do what you want. I agree with Suedonim though. Bases are nicer now so I don't have to iron a valance any longer.Husbands bed has a liftup base - great for storage

jeanie99 Mon 30-Sept-19 20:32:50

I do not use a valance, they were quite popular some years ago and even today they can be useful to cover the base.
But if I were you just go with what you want.
What's if matter what other folk have it's your home.

I agree about the coloured bases mine is grey and matches my bedroom perfectly. But if you want one why not go ahead it’s only you that’s probably going to see it anyway.

There are valances and valances, no they are not old fashioned, they are useful practical measures to cover what is below the bed eg I have a hynos hideaway with lovely plain drop down valances. I would try and get or make heavy plain valances, I must say that I dont particularly like the cheap gathered nylon coloured ones, however I used one when I was selling my house and it served its purpose

mcem Fri 27-Sept-19 21:31:27

If you think yours is neater with one then use one.
Do you have large numbers of people traipsing through your bedroom making comments about your valance (or lack of valance)?

paddyann Fri 27-Sept-19 20:59:41

no valance on mine,I keep each rooms spare bedding and towels in the drawers so I like to be able to open them without fiddling with a valance .All new beds within the past couple of years so the fabric matches the headboards and its quite smart

Sussexborn Fri 27-Sept-19 19:30:34

We have a super king size quilt over a king size bed so it hangs down almost to the floor. I keep wrapping paper and other bits in one side and summer or winter shoes in the other.

Oopsminty Fri 27-Sept-19 19:30:02

If you want a valance, have a valance.

Lyndylou Fri 27-Sept-19 19:26:48

I do. It is a straight one just slightly gathered at each corner. I made it myself from Dorma fabric to match the bedding because I don't really fancy seeing the base of the bed. But that is just me!

Ellianne Fri 27-Sept-19 19:16:40

Yes, the ones at the front end are smaller so you can still put a bedside table without getting in the way of opening them.

SueDonim Fri 27-Sept-19 19:16:01

I don't cover my divan. I think divans are upholstered in nicer fabrics nowadays, often with a choice of fabric and colour.

MissAdventure Fri 27-Sept-19 19:06:46

They're neat, small drawers, I must say.

I'm sure mine were hulking great things.

Ellianne Fri 27-Sept-19 19:05:03

Happy to show my drawers!
