I think you were unfortunate. We had the opposite problem. An architect who was less than helpful and did not listen to us, so he was dispensed with, but other professional including architectural technicians who were helpful and useful.
We are extending a listed building, so it is quite complicated. After dispensing with the architect, DH is project managing the process himself and employing the ouside professionals, like architectural technicians, as and when required to do specific one-off tasks. We have worked with architectural technicians and specialist surveyors before and found this was the best approach.
I can understand how frusrated you feel, we felt that with our architect, but I wouldn't dismiss a whole profession because one was incompetent.
