Hi everyone this my first time doing this

My husband has dementia and I am trying to find a superking NON noisy waterproof duvet protector and I can't find one

I have seen one in Soak and Sleep but it's not completely waterproof I have seen

Another one in the Victoria linen company but no reviews and I have never
heard of this company before they say NON noisy and machine washable and
Tumble dry but I don't want to have to get involved with arguing about it if it's
noisy or not as they say. I have enough problems as it is I have my husband to
care for and I am getting mobility problems to do with the cerebellum I am
Trying to get physiotherapy for this at the moment this is proving very difficult
but that's another subject my main problem is getting the bed sorted out I don't
I have a mattress protector from Costco and it's good

I have tried all the obvious places John Lewis Dunelm ECT
I am really at my wits end here it's very hard doing everything and being responsible for every little thing plus no one to talk to, please if anyone can help
me with this I will be really grateful thanks

mary so sorry that you have the virus, I’m sure most GNetters would be very interested in your symptoms!
I’m pleased that you have sorted the duvet problem and hope it all works well for you and your DH.
Don’t be shy about popping in again

It's probably too late to answer the posts I didn't see First
M&S have a sparks offer on bedding so I have taken the plunge and bought 3 of their super washable duvets

Great reviews and I am thinking I can probably the whole thing in the washing machine cover and all they say you have it back on the bed same day but I think that's pushing it it's expensive to start but it has to be done.
Lots of brilliant suggestions here I am going to keep this page so I can come back to it when I feel better
Both of family very high flying jobs and I am Irish so brothers or sisters here
Thanks to all of you you're very kind
I have the coronoavirus at the moment so just exhausted, thanks

mary294 please apply for Carer’s Allowance too. It will pay for laundry, maybe a cleaner every two weeks or even every week and help out with maybe getting taxis occasionally. This will help you be independent for longer. But - remember that you are only human and sometimes you need professional help. Your GP must refer your husband to get him a social worker. You may also find it a great help if the social services can get your husband to a day centre at least once a week. The one my dad initially refused to go to became the highlight of his week and it was a godsend to me knowing someone else was taking over that day. He was collected and driven home. You may be able to go too, as there is often a section for the carer with different activities and you would get lots of information, support and they make sure you have some fun to keep you going. Do back and speak to us. Do you have any family help?

Oversized duvet covers don't really work very well. The part that doesn't have any duvet inside it ends up over either your shoulders or your feet. I tried it and froze.

If you are using larger covers that you already have and don't want to waste, machine the extra fabric so that it fits - it is just straight seams.

NotAGran55 Mon 02-Mar-20 18:33:45

Mary would your husband consider wearing incontinence pants of some sort ?

mumofmadboys Mon 02-Mar-20 18:32:25

Can you put an old duvet cover on the duvet first and then another one on top?

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 18:05:51

Joking about mixing different oversized covers on the doubles

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 18:04:42

Dinner over thanks to everyone for all your help I will be following up on the suggestions especially for the Alzheimers I didn't know you could actually speak to someone the part where I joined just asks for money and also to do one of their walks for funds I have find the support part now I was disappointed when I couldn't find a support section.
I can't believe I have spent hours and hours looking for a superking waterproof duvet protector and didn't think of changing to 2 double
My husband moves things and he moved the spare duvet cover I searched the
Over twice or Three times I gave up in the the end and bought a new one

That was just 2 weeks ago wonder if I can go oversized on doubles and mix and match 2 different colours on the bed guess what happened 4 days after I bought the new I found the missing one now I have 3

I really do advise you to seek the assessment of an Occupational Therapist as they can provide aids that you may not have thought of and look at the bigger picture of what you may need further on. I always used to say that you need to be dependant sometimes to become independant

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 14:11:15

Going to put on dinner and put something in new tumble dryer and start on my
Ten Thousand steps for today

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 14:08:56

The GP does has known for over a year I will ask about OT I am fiercely independent and never ask anyone for anything but maybe I have to
I try to keep healthy I had to get exercises off for cerebellum off You Tube
Because I was sent to an out of area hospital I am just out of plaster for a broken
Wrist and tripped last week one says I have a broken bone in my shoulder
The other consultant says it's not broken see a physio for it I asked him to refer

Me to a neuro physio but he said when I get appointment for shoulder physio I can refer myself that's rubbish of course.
I have been seriously let down by my GP I have been asking for 2 years to see a neurologist and they wouldn't do I knew there was something wrong the was intermittent
When we went for flu jabs a different GP saw me not able to walk she phoned me next day and got me a neurologist appointment
Too late as I have gotten worse over the 2 years my own GP persuaded me to go to a geriatric clinic instead he even got secretary from there to phone me and persuade too
I am angry hurt let down by them all they wouldn't listen they put it down age

Sorry for the rant and thanks I am going to buy 2 duvets I don't know why I didn't think of it probably 2 doubles

jura2 Mon 02-Mar-20 13:33:54

Honestly- I'd give up the superking duvet and swap for 2 doubles- and have a spare for him, so it can be washed and swapped. Ooops I see Elegran has beaten me to it. Very common in Continental Europe to have SKS with 2 separate duvets- much easier anyhow for changing cover- even in 'normal' circumstances.

So sorry you are having to deal with this x

Elegran Mon 02-Mar-20 13:26:49

Two single duvets are a good idea anyway, particularly for a super-king bed. They are far easier to get in and out of their covers, to wash and dry, and to put onto the duvet.

OT assessment is done by an Occupational Therapist, who comes to your house and looks at everything to see what would make it easier for your husband (and you!) They make recommendations for ways you might do things, and for equipment - which would be supplied to you!

Does your husband's GP know of his condition? If they do, ask them for a referral to an OT - and if (as I suspect) they don't yet know, then inform them as soon as you can. You need all the suport you can get. Don't be shy - there is no shame in asking for help coping with a VERY common and exhausting disability.

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 13:06:47

Laundry service sounds like a good idea I just got a tumble dryer this morning

I will let you know how I get on sometimes I just despair because of my own problem and the fear of the loss of my mobility and the slurred speech as well

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 13:02:35

Thanks to you all you're so kind I don't know what an OT assessment is I'm about to do the council tax I have looked at Alzheimer's and Mumsnet
Age UK all of them they don't go to the size
I have no contact with any of the care agencies yet
I am just managing it's so hard.
I am going to look up crossroads and the other Two

I can't thank you enough for your help first thing it's going to be Better Sleep Company
I haven't tried them

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 12:48:01

,I am buying a new duvet from Soak and Sleep and have to protect it somehow
The bed is new as well but that's protected by mattress cover
There are plenty of mattress protectors available

The incontinence companies only go up to double.
I don't want to buy from Victoria linen company unless someone on here has heard of themma
I hope I'm doing this in the right place on here and hopefully I'm not making too many mistakes I can't see properly at the moment because of the cerebellum problem

If I'm doing this in the wrong maybe someone can point me in the right direction

Feelingmyage55 Mon 02-Mar-20 11:17:49

Better sleep company make silent mattress protectors (also pillow covers). If the other solutions do not work out I would join the bases of two king size protectors. The the design would make it easy to cut off the sides, the sew the bases together if you or a friend has a sewing machine. Anyhow once you find one as a solution I expect you will need another two for changing/laundry. You are working so hard, it might also help if you can afford it, to get a local laundry do a collect/return service wash. There would be no ironing involved which would keep the price down. I hope you have applied for the council tax reduction for a spouse/partner with dementia and also carers allowance. Crossroads might give you an afternoon a week/fortnight to go out. Why not join the Good Morning and Soop’s Kitchen threads for some light relief and also support and friendship for yourself. Welcome to GN and take care of yourself too.

Oopsadaisy3 Mon 02-Mar-20 11:11:53

Probably not what you had in mind, but why not buy a couple of cheap single duvets, and wash and tumble dry them as needed ?
Prices start very low ( Argos have them, Ikea too I would think) far easier than struggling to change a super king duvet cover each time.

Riverwalk Mon 02-Mar-20 11:07:15

You sound quite desperate Mary I hope you're getting some sort of support.

Have you had an OT assessment for your husband? They then should provide what he needs.

In the meantime why not consider sheets and cotton cellular blankets, which would be easier to launder

Witzend Mon 02-Mar-20 11:06:53

mary, if you haven’t already, it might be worth asking on the Alzheimer’s Society Talking Point forum, for carers of people with dementia.
If you’re not a member it’s well worth joining anyway (it’s free) - personally I found it a lifeline. There weren’t often any easy answers, but it was good to be able to let off steam to others who knew exactly what it was like.

Have you looked on the AgeUK site? When I typed in "waterproof duvet covers" on Google, the AgeUK site came up showing several makes, most of them saying that they were soft which I would assume would also imply that they were quiet. Good luck in your search!

JuliaM Mon 02-Mar-20 11:02:27

Another idea is to join two large shower curtains together, preferably the nylon kind, to form a large pillowcase type cover and put that on first. Your local incontinence specialist nurse should be able to help too, details of how to contact her will be available via your GP Surgery.

mary294 Mon 02-Mar-20 10:59:23

Thanks for that didn't think of that but I'm not sure it would work I will keep it in mind but only the part of the cover that goes the mattress is waterproof so I don't think that would work thanks
I am very grateful for your advice

Missfoodlove Mon 02-Mar-20 10:47:00

Could you make a duvet protecter from a mattress protector?
