The Shelfie

I recently read about the new trend for creating a “Shelfie” and have realised that this is something that I have always done.
I love arranging and rearranging my various shelves until I am happy with how they look. I live close to the sea so my “Shelfie” has a coastal theme.

Do you have a favourite “Shelfie” you would like to share ?

This is my effort if I have succeeded, still struggling a bit with the old tech.

Having moved home a while ago, we gave a way a lot of tat ornaments and kept only those we like. Some are boxed-up and others are on show - occasionally they are swapped over, so that they all have their "turn" at being displayed on our various windowsills.

I love your shelfie gilly it is so pretty. After looking round my shelves I'm sorry to say that most of them are not very aesthetically pleasing, being crammed with books and such like. Must try harder!

Canadiangran, I think that is Aloe Vera.

Do you all position yourselves in front of your shelfies when you are zooming, face timing etc.?
I find myself fascinated by whatever is behind whichever person is being interviewed at home these days. This is the shelfie moment??

How cosy, Gilly! Your coffee set looks familiar to me; what pottery is it from?

I think by taking a photo you can look at the arrangement with fresh eyes for composition. I was just looking at my shelves and realized they are much too cluttered with mementos; i need to purge a bit.

Hi Gillybob
Since you are mad collector of cactus and succulents, do you know this one?
My one and only except for a Christmas cactus.

Sanseveria boncellensis

This one looked completely brown and nearly went into the garden waste.

Oh starblaze I have many more shelves, windowsills, mantelpiece etc. That are not so “ordered” . I just enjoy swapping and changing around .

Cactus often thrive on neglect Calli I have about 20 or more around the house . Sometimes I remember to feed and water them , sometimes I don’t but they often reward me with lovely flowers or strange growth spurts .

Starblaze Fri 19-Jun-20 23:37:44

I think maybe that should be nicnacs or nicnacs. Literally never typed that word before.

Starblaze Fri 19-Jun-20 23:36:39

I love looking at people's niknaks, it's just so interesting and makes me smile, not really sure why. I don't have a lot of pretty niknaks sadly... I'd love shelves like that. Used up all the space for books and pictures of the children

I have a very neglected cactus in the greenhouse, it probably hasn't been watered much for over 2 years. I decided to be kind and watered it again recently and it has rewarded me with a large and spectacular flower.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments . I really enjoy playing around with the display of special books and ornaments. I swap these around quite a bit until I am pleased with my “Shelfie” .

Did I mention that I am a mad collector of cactus and succulents too ? These often get to feature alongside my bits n’bobs . It’s really quite satisfying . smile

There are some lovely ideas here. I am quite conservative in setting things out in our house and in recent years I have adopted a minimalist style to cut down on Housework. The photos posted show great flair for design and I am reminded of the American lady - Anne somebody from a few years ago, I think the programme was called The House Doctor. She would just rearrange or add a few things and make a room look lovely.

Love your coastal theme shelfie gillybob. I don't have a shelfie but our conservatory is coastal themed. Pictures of the sea and beach huts as well as deck chair cushions. It is very tranquil and makes me want to visit the seaside asap.

Callistemon Fri 19-Jun-20 17:25:43

I think my house needs a revamp.

GillT57 Fri 19-Jun-20 16:33:17

Looks lovely gillybob, a wonderful mix of casual, comfortable and stylish, I am envious! I have a lovely handmade dresser in my kitchen/diner but it always ends up looking rather bland with no style or cluttered. You must have an eye for it, rather like the casual unkempt country garden look is the hardest to achieve! Next wet day I will have another try.

Love your Shelfie gillybob. I love nautical bits and pieces. My last house had a nautical theme running through it, since we moved I thought I’d have a change, but must say I’m missing it all now. I’ll have to start collecting again. DH won’t be pleased ?

Witzend Fri 19-Jun-20 15:45:07

Love the seaside themes! Yours is very pretty, Gillybob.
Alas we don’t really have any shelves that aren’t crammed with books, some are double stacked.
Though there is a mini shelf in the downstairs loo with a scary looking wooden cobra on it - I don’t think it’s yet made anyone wet themselves out of ?or if so they haven’t told me.

Ninarosa Fri 19-Jun-20 15:38:09

Sorry , rubbish photo. It's like the black hole of Calcutta here today.

Ninarosa Fri 19-Jun-20 15:27:34

A bit of a mish mash, a definite quirky animal theme going on. I'm particularly fond of Taz the Tasmanian devil Xmas tree topper, as it reminds me of when my son was absolutely bonkers about him.

Callistemon Fri 19-Jun-20 14:41:15

Ps I have got a money box like that, I empty my purse of 1ps and 2ps and they go in there for charity. Mine's a bit scratched though.

Callistemon Fri 19-Jun-20 14:39:00

No.

I'd like you to come and shelfie my house please, gillybob!
It needs a stylist.
(So do I)

Auntieflo Fri 19-Jun-20 13:56:07

Lovely shelfie Gillybob.

I have got shelves, but no themes, just favourite bits and bobs plonked down.

Sometimes they even get dusted.
