I am moving to a bungalow soon and need some advice, please, on how I can have my windows made safe so that I can have them open all the time, All I can think of is having some sort of wrought iron gate made as well as double glazed windows. Does anyone have any other suggestions, please?

You can get lots of window restraints. Have a look at these.

We live in a ground floor flat. Because of our cat (indoor cat only) we couldnt open our windows fully. We installed Child Safety Restrictors. They are steel wire covered in PVC and only allow the windows to be opened about 3". Because they are reinforced steel cable they wont snap and would need bolt cutters or such like to break which most burglars wont be carrying around with them!
We got ours from Amazon and any handy person could fit them.

We’ve got a Jackloc fitted on our back door. It has a steel core for security and safety. British made! Very helpful with advice.

Thank you all very much.

A house near us has white, vaguely sort-of decorative bars on downstairs windows, at least the ones I can see from the road. If you want to open windows properly I would guess that that’s the only option.
Personally I really dislike those restrictors that only let you open them a few inches - we’ve had them in holiday cottages and it’s really bothered me, being unable to open windows properly.

The first thing I did when I moved into my bungalow was have limitors fitted on one window in each bedroom, leaving one window to open fully as a fire exit. It allows me to have a window open all night.

I was thinking the other day that I don't think I could get out via the open window anymore - arthritis and weight gain might mean I get stuck!

Witzend we can override the limiters on our windows, just by opening them in a slightly difference way. Although the limiters were installed with the windows, maybe it’s different for retro-fitted.
