Need a new kettle

Cheap one from Tesco’s does the job for me!

I'm happy with a Breville with matching toaster bought in Tesco three years ago, nice and quiet too.

Depends a bit whether you want a traditional top-handle kettle, or if you prefer a jug type kettle. Any modern, new kettle will boil water quickly and efficiently.

Personally, I prefer a traditional kettle. Mine came from Sainsbury’s about five years ago, but I see they still do them. If you have weaker control of your hands / arms / wrists, then a jug-style one is probably safer.

I like the quick jug type electric kettles. But I do like the ones that automatically switch off when it is lifted from its base. Many do not do this and if you lift it up before it has switched off, when you put it back it continues to heat.

Apart from that, a good pouring area and easy to fill.

I recently bought a matching set of kettle and toaster from Russell Hobbs, and am very pleased with them.
For some years now, I have been filtering my water and stopped buying fruit juice in plastic bottles because the chemicals in the plastic are absorbed by the juice. I had forgotten that the same applies to a plastic kettle. The one I just bought is stainless steel, and I shall be sure to buy a metal one in future.

We seem to get through kettles every two or three years so have stopped buying expensive ones. Nearly fainted in John Lewis some months ago to find you could pay £100 for a kettle and most were around the £50 mark. Current model is a
Tesco £20 job, stainless steel, cuts out when removed from stand, and seems fine. Now over a year old so shall see how well it lasts.

I've never had an electric kettle! I've had my Prestige hob whistling kettle for over 12 years now. Looks like new. I've got used to knowing exactly how much water to put in it and how long it will take to come to the boil. The GC love it when it whistles!

Yesterday our 14 month old Russell Hobbs stopped working! We have had fairly expensive ones (Dualitt), cheap ones (Tesco’s £10). It makes no difference, they all konk out after about 1.5 - 2 years. We have never had one which lasted anything like 10 years.

When I was a child, my parents had the same Russell Hobbs electric kettle for years and years and years.

I got fed up with modern noisy kettles where the element cannot be replaced and in my case usually fails the day after the guarantee runs out. So I bought an old electric copper kettle on ebay that had a replaceable element. It cost ten pounds. I think it looks great and is very quiet. The only problem is it has no cutout or overheat protection so you cannot just switch it on and just leave it.

I've got a white one from Morrison's £7! Does the job perfectly.

I find some of the flexes are so short it is a pain finding a socket close enough. Admittedly one of the kettles I have with a very short flex was bought to be used upstairs after I had major surgery but I could not use it for that reason. That kettle only cost a fiver.

I love my Dualit- I decided to pay extra, I think around £45 because it does not dribble when pouring as others have done. I have had it a few years now and would certainly buy similar again.

My kettles only last around 14 months. Despite descaling , I love my Russel Hobbs one that matches my toaster lovely white set,

I am on my second set of Breville shiny black kettle & toaster set the last set lasted about 7yrs and both went out of action within 2 weeks of each other.

Mine is going on three years old. I got it from that well-known mail-order company. Morphy Richards, bright red plastic - cheap and cheerful and very fast. DS2 and partner have one of those boiling water taps which is convenient and removes any need for a kettle. However, I wouldn't have one in a house with small children, and how about absent-minded grannies?

After my gripe about our defective, 14 month old Russell Hobbs kettle (see above), I got through to their Customer Services (after holding for 20+ minutes).

I explained my circumstances and gave the date of purchase and model number. They replaced my faulty kettle with a new one, no questions asked. No receipt required nor return of the faulty model. A brand new one arrived in three days.

So Russell Hobbs Customer Service Dept is excellent. ⭐️
