Davidhs the dry-lining I mentioned above actually created a cavity between the existing wall and the plasterboard by studding it. It wasn't stuck to the wall as you suggest. It was a big job and "shrank" the rooms but it was SO much warmer afterwards.

If you have loft insulation the best way to insulate the walls is to dry line them, usually insulated plaster board is stuck to the existing interior that will make a big difference, it is a big Job and won’t be cheap. One other method is to fill the cavity wall with mineral fiber, a few years back the local council paid to have houses treated. No cost, No mess, that and double glazed windows makes my place warm.

polystyrene always sends a shudder down my spine,
Don't think there was ever a house in the U.K. at one time that did not have those polystyrene tiles on the ceilings.
I recall tomorrows world on the BBC had these very thick wallpapers on the show(brown in colour?) that reflected heat back into the room.

I do know there is such a thing as insulating lining paper. In the old days it had a thin polystyrene type layer. I don’t know what it is now.

We rented a bungalow years ago that hat would very, very cold rooms. The owner had them dry-lined and it made a massive difference. I expect this may be expensive but it was SO much better the following winter.
