hello - does anyone live in or near Malton, or maybe moving to, or moving away from Malton? Single at 70 I am considering renting a cottage or flat in the town, heeding the advice offered previously regarding proximity to services and transport. I do not drive anymore either so have to be pragmatic.
I wonder if the town will expand and services be swamped? I am in W.Yorkshire with no ties here now, fed up with incessant rain. Candour appreciated, thank you all (love this site!)

Hi Sarenka, I live just outside Malton, I’ve lived around here all my life. I’m sure you would like it here, it has expanded quite a lot over the last few years due to new housing (like a lot of places) but is still essentially a market town. Transport is excellent with a frequent reliable bus service running from Leeds to Scarborough. The railway station is located next to the bus station and the surgery is there too. It isn’t difficult to get an appointment usually though obviously things are a little different currently. There are several dental practices but none doing NHS. You would have to travel to Scarborough or York to find one. We have some lovely local shops and unlike some town centres Malton is thriving. Please feel free to PM me for any further info. I know pretty much every road and street in the area!

We live in Filey, but visit Malton. I don’t think you can go wrong, best thing we ever did leaving West Yorkshire after raising children and working. Happy retirement.

I know Malton very well. Would not recommend you move there. The bus service is the coastliner to York/Leeds and Scarborough Filey or Whitby. Nightmare to get a seat on a hot summer day and takes ages. The train station, which is also the bus station is to the east of the town and a fair walk from certain housing areas. You may wind up having to take a taxi for the last leg of your journey. Morrison’s supermarket is swamped with people and not a restful shop. There is an Aldi / Lidl too. The small theatre puts on a few events but no regular programme really even before covid 19.

Going for a weekend one sees the loveliness of the market town but to live there is not the same at all. In terms of clubs and activities for seniors I would recommend Scarborough. It has cheaper rents too and a good bus service within the town and along the coast plus SJT, walking the prom and shops. Taxis within the town are super cheap and it has the hospital. Some parts are dire but the south side is very pleasant. You could take the Coastliner or train to Malton weekly to get your rural fix.

Well Nashville I know Malton very well too as I actually live there! The very reliable and frequent bus service can indeed be busy in summer but only at certain times. The railway station is over the road from the bus station and there is a taxi office too, all being pretty central for Malton and Norton, the two towns generally being treated as one, and there is also a local bus service. Everyone seems to manage just fine and think it all very convenient. Also Ryedale Community Transport, a charity, provides an excellent service helping people get to hospital, day trips etc. Morrison’s supermarket (who do click and collect or home deliveries) is also nearby, as is Asda and Lidl. We don’t have an Aldi. There is also a smallish Sainsbury’s close to the main shopping area. I presume by ‘small theatre’ you mean the Milton Rooms. They host all sorts of events and concerts there, pantos, talks etc. Not every week but it’s pretty good for a small town. There is also an excellent cinema. Malton also has a hospital with a small injuries unit so only office hours but they are brilliant there and on the odd occasion we’ve had to go there we have been seen immediately. The rents may well be less in Scarborough, I’m not surprised given how down-at-heel it looks it many areas. I would take issue that the South side is the better, the North side is much nicer. But Sarenka is looking at a market town not a very busy seaside resort. There are lots of lovely places within easy reach of Malton which is surrounded by beautiful countryside.
