Cleaning wine etc off a Sandstone fireplace

My Daughter used Muckoff spray and a stiff scrubbing brush to clean up a very discoloured sandstone mantelpiece over my late fathers Inglenook fireplace, it took a few attempts, but it finally came up clean and fresh looking.

The second idea was to call in a Sandstone cleaning company, who specialise in cleaning up the exterior of old sandstone buildings such as Churches and Banks. Not cheap, and a very dirty and dusty job as they sandblast them clean, but they do bring them up as good as new.

Sorry I can’t help but would like to know also how to get candle wax off also ..

I cleaned wax and soot deposits from my DS’s sandstone fire hearth with white vinegar and a nonstick pan scrubber. Worked well and the vinegar doesn’t leave a lasting smell!

I will give the Muckoff a try, as for the TSP I did know about this product but I would be too frightened to use it with it being so toxic.

I tried everything but in the end painted mine with masonry paint.
The result was very good, much better than I had hoped.
