I chose Southern Stone once and had to paint over it again very quickly, it dried completely differently to the picture on the tin.

Just an update to my OP.

As you all said, I judged too soon. It has come out lighter than I thought it was going to be, a sort of restful grey. Now everything is back, it has really grown on me. We have moved stuff round, a bureau and bookcases are in different positions, I have culled some books, and re-arranged plants, I have quite a few, and re-positioned lamps.

I think when it is safe to go shopping for non essentials, we shall get a new picture to go above the fire, and also some new cushion covers. Really need to see them, don’t want to go online and mis-judge colours.

Now which room needs doing next?....

I have polished pebble in my bedroom with navy and mustard curtains and mustard bedding, not too different from gold, i think it warms it up.

I have polished pebble in one of the bedrooms and I love it. I think it's a really fresh, clean looking colour.

I’ve got polished pebble in my lounge, it’s a lovely colour I think, it’s warm and not dark at all.

Dear SIL came round the other day to paint a crack in the ceiling where plasterboard has shrunk above the wood burner. Shook tin of paint to mix it up and forgot to check if lid was properly on - weeee........paint all over parquet floor, rug etc. etc. - but he meant well!

Lovely colour which both my 30+ year old sons have used. I tried a small pot of it for my lounge - have realised I need to be more modern in my outlook!

Dare I admit to choosing Polished Pebble for the living room and really liking the finished effect. Thinking of using it in the bedrooms too..... Oh dear, there’s no hope.

It was meant to be creamy neutral shade to match the dining furniture.

Funny enough polished pebble was one of the colours I looked at for my living room. I had 6 different Dulux samples. And put them on the 4 walls. Decided to go for frosted steel it's light grey with a hint of lilac. Will go great with my furniture. I have charcoal grey curtains and lighter grey lamp shades. Pale grey carpet. Booked the decorator yesterday to come 12th April. He gets booked up quick so made sure I could get the date I wanted. Hall will be almond white to match the kitchen. I live in a bungalow. Bedrooms are pale lilac and shower room light grey wall tiles darker grey floor tiles . My kitchen is olive green units . Really pleased how it all goes together.

The same happened to me with a very expensive Farrow and Ball paint. The decorator explained it isn't the actual colour of the paint but the light shining onto the walls. The bluey grey look is a sort of natural occurrence.
All very scientific if you want to look it up!

It might look better when you've completed the task so don't despair just yet. Perhaps with a few pictures, mirrors, etc it may look better, even look trendy, like something out of a magazine.

If it’s too dark just do one wall in that colour

Whatever shade you choose, seeing a whole wall painted in a new colour is always a shock. Don't judge too soon.

Once things go back into a room (furniture, plants, lights, pictures etc.) we rarely see a whole wall and the effect is diluted by complements and contrasts.

Blue and gold shades are a classic colour combination so it should look fine. I'd have to add a little green too - but then I'm houseplant crazy.

Yes, DH keeps saying it will dry lighter, hope so, daren’t suggest mixing it with anything else!

Oh yes, I can see it now. A big picture of a grey sea with some stormy clouds lined with gold where the sun is breaking through and the yellow tones are reflecting on the water.

And a cushion ?

I think it will look great. Not a “safe” choice but a striking one, A fresh look.

Just need some accessories to pull it together ?

It may dry lighter or do you have a tin of white you could mix in?
