Stamp duty holiday extension petition

Yesterday evening I listened to the online debate on the subject of the stamp duty holiday that was sparked by the petition. Jesse Norman answered on behalf of the treasury but frankly said nothing.

Many people were arguing that the stamp duty holiday should be maintained for those who are mid-transaction and are not buying a second home. That would seem fair to me.

I’m happy to say after 3 consecutive Fridays when exchange of contracts didn’t happen for many reasons, DD3 and family finally moved into their new home last Friday on completion. There were 11 movers in the chain. I will never know how it all held together.

That's great news, let's keep our fingers crossed. I am still waiting for confirmation of my completion date, but unfortunately have had confirmation I'll have to pay an extra month's rent.

Thank you to those who signed the petition - sufficient signatures were obtained to result in forcing a debate. There is a suggestion that it might be extended for a month to help those who are mid-transaction.

My guess is that there won't be an announcement about it until the budget in March.

Thanks to all signers - yes that is what I think glammagran - those who only miss the deadline because searches etc are grinding so slowly.

I’ve signed the petition easily. At the very least, it should apply to movers who will have already incurred costs eg solicitors, searches etc.

I'm sorry but government have responded to this petition on 10 December, with no.

I think they should extend it for people who are already in an ongoing transaction, which is only going to miss the deadline because of solicitor activity outstanding.

Signed. My new build isn't ready till April/May and the developer wants me to complete by the end of March. My solicitor says No! because I guess there's a tiny risk the developer could go bust. I'm listening to the solicitor but that means coughing up £3K plus which I'd rather spend on necessary new furniture.

My DD and her partner put their first time buyers property on the market in December 2019. Not long after Covid arrived and property transactions ground to a halt. They received an offer in July. In October the person at the top of the chain of 6 pulled out immediately prior to exchange but not long after someone else filled the gap. They have still not exchanged contracts as some paperwork is still outstanding from someone else in the chain and councils are moving at a snail’s pace. DD is having a 2nd baby in April and is very stressed by all this. I just hope it happens before March.
