We have an onyx-look insert and plinth to our fire surround (beiges).
Now the room has more a grey colour scheme the fireplace looks out-of-place.
How can I change the colour of it? Has anyone done this?

Have you tried looking inBig DIY stores. maybe clad the hearth and back with Fireproof board . you could then add a wood trim around the base. Paint that and the surrounding wood the same colour maybe a grey or dark blue black.? waterbase paint silk .
to see if they blend try it on a piece of cardboard. as a mood board.

That would work for my room baubles. A charcoal grey I think. Spending so many hours in this room lately it will be nice to look at a new wall IYKWIM.

puzzler my DD painted her dark wood fireplace a slightly darker shade of grey than the wall behind it. She couldn’t change the marble insert and hearth but it has made a huge difference to the overall look.

The wallpaper I’ve ordered is being delivered this morning. I’ll unroll some and hold against the fire surround to see how white the background is.
A coat of grey paint on the wooden surround will lift it from the ivory shade it is now. I like the thought of changing the marble-look insert.
Nannytopsy , great idea if it’s easy to do.
The tiled plinth can then be painted a stone grey.
Thank you all for your ideas. I know there are many creative Grans on here. ?

The nicest fire surround I ever saw was at the house of an artist friend. She had taken the surround back to wood and given it a lime wash effect. The insert was a white marbled effect.

We fitted a fire like that a few years ago. The marble effect panel was a laminated hardboard. Could a fireplace fitter change the panel?

Redhead you made a great job of the fireplace. Its lovely.

That’s a handsome fire Cherry.
We will keep the gas fire as it’s used often. The room has 3 outside walls on a windy corner and we find we need the fire on in the winter.
Thanks Jane , I’ll put all these ideas to DH and we will come up with a plan. He’ll do the work, I’ll project manage and order materials ?

There are lots of ideas on Pinterest if you want to completely replace it although the picture you have posted is perhaps what you want to go for eventually. I would first try painting it all, you can get tile paint which may cover the onyx look insert. There is a product called ESP which if you apply it before paint it will let you paint anything, including plastic. We painted the mahogany fire surround we inherited with this house, we cleaned it with sugar soap and made a key for the paint with wire wool, then we applied a coat of white emulsion followed by white paint (not gloss). When we recently redecorated it we took it all out, had the gas point disconnected, DH filled in all the holes the fireplace left, replaced the skirting board and now have a wall mounted electric fire with a nice flame effect.

Has anyone tried this type of thing?

I thought the same Blossoming! Once we’d painted the surround (Soft Almond I think it was )? the beige cream onyx didn’t seem out of place next to the wood flooring.

My large rug also has a little taupe in the pattern and tones with that as well.

Your fireplace is very pretty Redhead and unique to you. As the property programmes say “you have put your own stamp on it” ?

I think I’d leave the stone alone and paint the surround and mantelpiece either brilliant white or a very pale grey.

Our fireplace was identical my two children and I tiled it and put this little heater there I think it’s looks cosy.

My daughter has just switched from Annie Sloane paint to Frenchic. I’d love to try it myself.

If you use stone paint, you put a primer on first, sticks to anything. We have had ours on for 14 years now, and none of it has come off.

Now I’m thinking the wooden flooring looks good ... ?

Puzzler61 Mon 01-Feb-21 11:41:41

Pants where did the a come from!

Daddima Mon 01-Feb-21 11:41:36

My daughter in law has been running amok with Frenchic paint. She’s painted anything which sits still long enough, kitchen units, fireplace, the lot! It looks fantastic, and she says it is very easy to use.

Puzzler61 Mon 01-Feb-21 11:41:17

Your room apants and nadateturbe ‘s have wooden floors. I wasn’t bothered about the beige tiling until we had a charcoal carpet and went for black TV stand and floor lamp. Then the beige looked out of place to me.
(I know this is not a problem compared to other problems of health and worry, but just in the context of getting the deco to match or contrast really).
