Redecorating, walls or carpet first?

Just what the thread title says. Our lounge/ diner is well overdue a makeover, but I don’t know where to start. Do I get the carpet laid first and then get the decorating done or vice versa.? To add to the mix, I am still undecided whether to continue with carpet or go for a wood floor!

No contest. I can’t think of a single reason for putting down a new carpet before decorating. You’d just have to cover it up straightaway to protect it, wouldn’t you? And how would you paint the skirting boards? confused

Decorate first, then you can see how it looks with the wooden floor before deciding whether to carpet.

Walls first then cover up all the mess on the floor with nice carpet or wood!

Most definitely walls first

Start at the top, work down. So ceiling, walls, skirting, and finally floor.
Unless of course you want to sand the floor in which case that needs to be done along with the preparation.

I’m planning to redecorate my whole house so need to work out the order of rooms as well! In the lounge I am having a wooden floor instead of carpet so I think I’ll get the old carpet removed before the work starts, then the skirting boards can be repainted right down to the floor boards. My new floor will be the last thing to be done.

Traditional way is gloss work first, doors and skirting. Then the emulsion can cover any smudged edges of gloss. Ceiling then drips, roller spatter doesn’t mark new paint on walls, then the walls.
Soft furnishings, floors later.

Paint the skirtings first and the ceiling if you are going to do it,and the doors remove all the handles and switch covers for a neat finish.
Then decorate either wallpaper or paint then decide your floor covering.

Definitely ceiling, walls, skirting board and doors first. Then lay the carpet. If you do the carpet first, you're bound to get paint on it no matter how careful you are! It's much easier to touch up a bit of scuffed paintwork than to get paint off the carpet!

Yes,walls first.

If the carpet is definitely going and being replaced with new, then it is better to decorate first. Emulsion first, beginning with the ceiling then the walls if painting them too, and doors, followed by glossing skirting boards and sills. Any rubbing down done prior to any painting of course. Then everything is all sparkling and fresh ready for the new flooring.
(We’ve cheated with the skirting boards and replaced the ones downstairs with ones that don’t need painting or varnishing, and will do the same upstairs as we replace carpets - cuts out lots of painting).
Wooden floors are very easy to keep clean, and can be brightened up with a rug here and there if you want (though not where they might be a trip hazard, of course). They are warm, too, but certainly, flooring type is a personal preference, and we all have our own likes and dislikes.
Enjoy your new look ?.

When I moved into my bungalow about 18 months ago the carpets where in such a state and there where mice . So after they where got rid off had new carpets in living room and both bedrooms. When I had the decorating done covered them with no nonsense flooring covering it's sticky and comes in a roll. Needs 2 people to put down. Anyway my bedroom walls and ceiling needed to be re plastered then the painting was done plus having new shower room install. The floor covering protected all the carpets no one bit of plaster or paint got through onto them. Had it from Screwfix. In an ideal world I would have had all the work done before new carpets but couldn't live there with the state the carpets where in.

Whilst on decorating ideas can anyone recommend on which paint to use.We have 8 doors plus skirtings which were re painted in Dulux gloss white last Mar just to brighten things up during start of lockdown.Hopefully if things go as planned we intend fully decorating when everywhere re opens but as last years paint is already yellowing would welcome your suggestions(do not want expense in complete change of doors at this moment in time).

Party4 did you use gloss paint? My decorator doesn't use gloss paint for that reason. He uses Dulux paint. For both walls and woodwork. The woodwork paint I know washes out the brushes with cold water but don't know what it's called. I had it in satin finish as I don't like shiny paint work. If you look on the Dulux web site it's has all the paints they do so you can probably find out there. Hope that helps.

Sorry you said you used gloss .

Party4 Sun 21-Mar-21 21:46:15

Thanks Whiff think we may take your advice and try dulux satin as on reading it offers a more modern look and Dh has always insisted it is the oil in gloss that causes the yellowing.

From the mistakes I made last time, find curtain fabric you like, match paint to fabric. Paint, find carpet, lay carpet, (make &) hang curtains

Definitely paint first
