garden swing seats

Our wooden garden swing is about 20yrs old...we use a garden furniture paint on it every couple of years..

We have a swing seat in the the garden it’s very much needed for the amount of people who visit us. It’s great for sitting in the sunshine with a canopy on top. And it’s great for grandchildren swinging on and they can have lots of fun on it. We’ve always bought the metal frame ones they last for years in all weathers. They’re very sturdy.Get one with a well padded seat though and you’ll be able to have a wee afternoon snooze. The only downside is you’ve to put the seating away every night and bring it out in the mornings. Hey ho so what, it’s no real burden to do that enjoy your swing seat. Hope you get the weather to sit outside in the garden.

I used teak oil on my wooden seat. The wood does naturally age and go slightly grey over time.

Currently I have a metal frame one with an artificial canvas type seat. That looks good still after several years and I just scrub it clean every so often. It stays out all year.

How many people to sit on it? We have both a metal one and a cane bubble one. The metal one doesn't have cushions so isn't as comfortable and cosy. The cushions on the cane one are rain proof so stay out all the time except in real downpours. The metal one swings better than the bubble one whose seat hangs on chains. They are both of modern design.

I’d have thought wood preferable, since you can oil or treat it.

A friend of ours bought a relatively cheap metal framed one but the seat wasn’t deep enough (back to front) for comfort (except maybe by children but they had no Gdcs to use it) so it was never really used and eventually the metal rusted anyway and it was chucked.

Ours is wood, and I like that ageing silvered look, the only problem with ours, is that it creaks, if anyone has a cure for creaking, I’d be very pleased.

It's not petty at all.
I've always found even five minutes on my garden swing seat is a very therapeutic break in a busy day.
I especially like taking a glass of wine out there in the evening, even after dark. It's quite grounding.
You want a choice you'll be happy with.

My DB &SiL were given one by their DC for a wedding anniversary recently. It is metal. We call them Bacon Slicers in our family because of the squeaky noise they develop. I used to worry about little fingers being caught in the mechanism but maybe that's my paranoia.
Get the most comfortable one and look after it.

It's swings and roundabouts (groan) but a wooden one would probably be a bit heavier although some metal ones can be heavy too. If it's going to stay in the same place all the time that is irrelevant.

Those garden storage chests are useful for storing cushions overnight although we bring them in over the winter.

Mine is wooden and 4yrs old, I say mine because Mr MW says it makes him seasick!

It stays out in all weathers and has developed a lovely grey sheen despite being rubbed down and treated with clear woodstain each year. We put it on bricks/paviers in the winter to help keep its feet dry.

It didn't have cushions but that's fine, we have plenty that will do. It does have a built in wooden slatted sun canopy and a little bit of a shelf each end to stand a glass.

Where is yours to be sited? Mine is in a little sheltered south facing sun trap on paving. I think that should partly inform your decision as I wouldn't want to move mine very often as it is quite heavy. I suspect the metal frame ones are lighter.

thank you all for your kind advice.Cant really find them in garden centres etc now,so it will be from online and i am just going by cost and other peoples feedback,i miss the old days of finding what you want in a shop and touching/trying it first.

Mine is metal framed with a raffia/ plastic seat . I’ve had it around 7 years and it’s still like new. It’s very comfortable seating for 3 people and I bought it from Costco.
