What's it like living in and around Skegness?

I have a friend who moved near Skegness primarily because the housing is cheaper. I went to visit her by train pre-covid.
It took forever, the train never really went fast, the flat fields of cabbages never changed and I felt like someone from the
1950's going nowhere fast all alone on an empty train.

The fish and chips in Skegness were nice but lets face it, for
someone who lives in France , they are nice anywhere in
England!

I quite fancy the 1950s feeling. Maybe I should go for a visit.

Fish and chips at the English seaside is certainly a plus.

When my eldest DD was a tiny girl her dream house was the 1930's bungalow by the steps leading to the beach in Sutton

Luluaugust yes, Sutton on Sea is nice - very quiet and unspoiled.

We've stayed at The Bacchus a few times.
Very dog friendly

As far as transport is concerned most of Lincolnshire is covered by InterConnect & CallConnect bus services. Interconnect buses link the bigger towns & have regular timetables. CallConnect are demand responsive. You need to phone and book them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincolnshire_InterConnect
There is a railway station.

Skegness has a community hospital. Boston is the nearest major hospital. Lincoln also has a major hospital.

The Embassy Theatre has some good shows. I've been a couple of times.

Personally I think Cleethorpes is a better option than Skegness. Much of Cleethorpes has cable broadband which is fast. Transport links are better with regular services to Manchester Airport via Doncaster & Sheffield. Trains connect to the East Coast Mainline at Doncaster & stop at Meadowhall for shopping. There's a major hospital in Grimsby.

Weather wise the Lincolnshire Wolds protect Grimsby & Cleethorpes from the worst of the weather from the west. We rarely get snow and often have milder winters than the rest of the country. On the other hand we often miss out on the scorching hot days. It seems we have our own microclimate but it suits me.

Love Somerset/Devon and the a Pembroke coast.

I live in a coastal town in Devon. We have the drug problems and poverty here as well. Not that different really.

Hopefully that money if it happens will go somewhere to help.
The problem with Governments ( with an s so not just this govt lol) announcements are made but the money doesn't always materialise fingers crossed it does.

I grew up on the Yorkshire Coast i love the beauty but would never live at the seaside again.

I seem to remember reading quite recently that both Skegness and Mablethorpe have been awarded over £40 million by the government to fund regeneration projects along the east coast.

Not sure which others towns will benefit, Scarborough possibly?

I am not sure why i said never. I mean wouldn't choose to. Especially for older years - having to travel to hospitals for starters. We used to have to drive to York for the cinema. No arenas. More opportunities for young people's jobs nearer cities.
Things like outdoor music events in Dolby Forest or the OAT in Scarborough are a good thing.
I would rather travel to visit the coast than travel to do day to day life.
I aren't looking down on the coast i left when i turned 25 and live 2 miles out of a city 10 miles from Leeds been here 25 years this year and i love the accessibility to so much more.
But we do enjoy a run to the coast.
There are some idyllic coastal towns but overcrowding in season and problems because of hidden poverty would put me off living there.
A lot of people move from West Yorkshire to the coast but i am one who did the reverse.
And it's colder and a biting wind that chills you to the bone.

I was at school with a girl who had an aunt who lived in Skegness. She spent summer holidays there and told me the posh people of Skeggy pronounced it, 'Skake Ness.'

You always come away from anywhere on the East coast feeling as if you have been sandblasted. The best thing about Skegness is it’s close proximity to Gibraltar Point - if you’re a bird watcher!

I went there out of season ( early May, so quite sunny) a couple of years ago when DH was off doing something else.
It was certainly bracing, the Bingo Hall was open though and I walked quite a way up the beach (quite cold and windy) and could still hear the caller.
Nothing much else to say, it looked very run down, but I guess in the Summer months the teenagers will like it for the Amusement arcades.
I just bought a couple of sticks of rock and left, it was easy to park though, just me and 3 other cars.

I won’t comment on the crowd funder as we’ll get political, but I am interested why you wouldn’t live in a seaside town again?? I’ve thought it would be quite nice??

If I had to live somewhere on that bit of coast I would choose Sutton on Sea.

MOnica - haven’t been for years but mum went with a friend and said they were frightened to go out at night due to all druggies about. I guess as with everything if you have fun in your soul you’ll enjoy life wherever you are. X

It's a thumbs down for me. I don't like Skeggy at all.

Polarbear2 we have just spent a long weekend in Greta Yarmouth.

We had a great time balancing walking along the prom eating ice creams and hot donuts, playing crazy golf and going on the boating lake with visiting the two excellent local museums, exploring the old town and visiting nearby NT properties.
