Bath or no bath?

We’re creating a new, small bathroom. Our debate is wether to have a shower over a bath or shower only. My only reason to consider a bath is if we were to have grandchildren ( which as it stands is not very probable) . Neither of us bath and we’re on a water meter. We already have an en-suite so this would essentially be our guest bathroom for visitors. Wondering if anyone has had a similar dilemma, what did you decide and maybe regret. I’m for a shower only but OH wants a shower over a bath.

One of my DC was browsing properties today. They saw a house with showers-only and commented that it must be an old person’s house. So I did a quick survey of my dc and none would buy a house without a bath unless it would be easy and cheap to add a bath. I hadn’t mentioned or even thought of this thread so I don’t know whether they’re mind-readers or something! ?

Bath 100% i regret putting a shower into our bungalow i soooo miss my bath that i am thinking of redoing the the shower room out and installing a bath i cannot envision not having a good soak any longer

I have both a bathroom with overhead shower plus double hand basins next to my bedroom and a shower room plus double hand-basins with washing and drying machines. I only use the shower room even though it is further away. When remodeling the bathroom, for sale value, I put in a new bath. Five years on I think is was a silly idea, as I will never use it. The grand children always use the shower. When they were very small I hardly ever had them for nights

As you have an ensuite with a shower I'd fit a bath with shower over in the bathroom just for the saleability of the house.

We had our bath removed some years ago and had a larger shower cubicle instead. Love the shower but often regret having the bath removed because although we didn't use the bath very often the option was still available. Sooooo, my advice would be to have a shower over the bath

I kept a bath in one out of 4 bathrooms,we do use it a few times a month. For families, always useful to have one somewhere.

I don't think it makes much difference to selling a house these days if there is no bath. Most young families just shower these days and if there are tiny children a baby bath can be used. I certainly don't think it would stop most people buying a house if everything else suited them.

We gave a shower room and a larger bathroom. Our bathroom needs a serious overhaul in the coming months. We are considering taking out the bathroom and installing a larger shower unit with a seat. I am currently looking at bathrooms online and in brochures.

I hate baths, only ever shower and it saves on water too.

Can anyone understand those house decorating programmes where people have a bath in the bedroom? Some hotels have them as well. I can’t imagine anything worse than having a damp bath next to the bed. Might make sense if you can have a long shaky bath and watch tv at the same time, I suppose, although, knowing me I’d drop the controls into the bath.

What's an Omnitub SecondhandRose ?

SecondhandRose Tue 24-Aug-21 12:46:03

I love a bath. Essential for achey muscles and feet and nails that need a good soak and ton soften hard skin. Also love a shower but baths are great if you have the time. I quite fancy an Omnitub.,

*many houses I've seen online that previously had en suites (I checked that post and STILL didn't see the errors)

GagaJo Tue 24-Aug-21 12:39:39

En suites are going out of Vogue now AcornFairy. Many houses I've seen online have been converted into cupboards or taken out as part of a renovation.

I wouldn't want one. Quite a waste of space. And extra cleaning! When I had a house with 3 bathrooms, we deliberately didn't use one to cut down on the housework.

I detest showers - I always feel cold when I get out. Give me a bath any day (and that is what I have every day). I have also ‘tested’ that I use less water when I have my daily bath than on the occasions I have a shower.

AcornFairy Tue 24-Aug-21 12:15:41

Interesting to read how many of you have en suite facilities PLUS another bathroom. We have one bathroom with a bath and a shower over it. I love my baths - can't remember when I last showered at home. Showers are difficult for me as I have balance issues so constantly need something to grab on to. Our bath is perfect for our needs, complete with handles, grab rails, etc. And I love almost total immersion! But I'm aware of the volume of water needed for that so I'm trying to cut down!!

Severnsider Tue 24-Aug-21 12:05:06

I love my bath. Soaking in the warm water with lots of bubbles make all my aches and pains disappear. I try to avoid showers as I slipped in one once and hurt myself. And, it always feels cold when you get out - I don't know why, I'm always warm getting out of a bath.

Definitely keep a bath in the house somewhere if you ever want to sell it.

Dit47 Tue 24-Aug-21 11:53:49

Depends on the size of the shower. If it’s big enough so little ones can stand out of the way of the water (and that includes me) I would rather have that but if it’s only small, I would rather have an over bath shower for the same reason. I don’t like being wet all over at once and don’t want to wash my hair every time either.

Go for a walk in shower! Lots of room to put a baby bath on the floor if needed. Our 3 yr old grandson loves having a shower here- nice and quick too with minimal mess to clean up.
If future purchasers want a bath they can install one quite easily. I think baths with showers over are quite dangerous and difficult to use as you get older

Liz46 Sun 22-Aug-21 18:52:10

We had a new bathroom this year and have had a large walk in shower installed with a handle.

We are very pleased with it and think that, if we ever sell our house, a bath could always be fitted where the shower is now.

Visgir1 Sun 22-Aug-21 18:43:13

We had a bath fitted in our in-suite bathroom with a stand alone walk in shower cubicle about 15 yrs ago. Never once has it ever been used, I use it as a clothes hanger!
Now the shower couldn't live without (that needs updating now).
Family bathroom is fine for my GC pop them in that bath, that also has a shower fitted over the bath.
I wouldn't bother now with a bath in the in-suite.

Exactly what Kate54 says. Bath every time.

Grandmadinosaur Sun 22-Aug-21 16:29:30

Welshwife how lovely ?

Grandmadinosaur Sun 22-Aug-21 16:28:55

Having trouble getting into the bath so we got rid this year and had a whole new bathroom with walk in shower. I love it. No problem with slipping as I got a triangular shape bath mat from the online retailer starts with A ends in N. (Don’t know if allowed to mention full name). We have a 2nd grandchild on the way so will buy a baby bath to use when required as are the parents.
Regarding selling houses with no bath to families my ds and family moved into such a property last year. My 4 year old dgs is used to a shower. My DIL loves and I mean loves a bath but didn’t put her off buying !
